She could be dead... that's a lot of development put into her though... just to kill her off. Although I wouldn't put it past Whedon, he killed off Buffy twice, he killed off Anya without much fanfare...
Continuity-wise it doesn't make sense really though. They're trying to say all of Astonishing fits between issue 204 of X-Men and the beginning of Messiah Complex, when the end of issue 204 and the start of Messiah Complex basically link without any time passing.

Rachel, Lilandra & Korvus escape.Vulcan gives a speech during an execution scene saying he wants to expand the Shiar Empire. And that if he gets in his way he'll destroy the Mummandrai(Xavier). It ends o a clifhanger implying someone is about to get executed.
