Sarutobi nor the Sanin have any Kekkai Genkai's either and are considered among the most powerful from Konoha along with the 4th. But most people with a Kekkai Genkai always beat a person who is extremely skilled, and a more skilled person has a better chance at beating a person with more chakra. Combine Kekkai Genkai and skill and you have Kakashi one of the best ninja in the series. Actually there have been few times a Kekkai Genkai has been beaten. Haku, and Neji are the only real ones I can remember and that was by Naruto who has his own hax power. Well Hinata and Sasuke have been beaten but those were by better users of a Kekkai Genkai. Meanwhile Kimimaro would have killed all three people he fought because of his, and Itachi and Madara are two of the strongest in the manga because of their kekkai genkai. Don't remember if anybody else having a Kekkai Genkai besides Shodaime..and he isn't really known.
