Are you watching the OVAs, or the TV series? The TV series is just an average anime, IMO, but the OVAs are just plain awesome 😎 (since they follow the story line of the manga very closesly). If you are watching the TV series, then I recommend that you watch the OVAs after finishing it.

My point was that the manga is far better than the TV series, IMO; which makes the OVAs better than the TV sereis by deault (as least for most Hellsing fans, including myself). So I was only recommending that you check out the OVAs, because it "would" matter in that it actually has some decent story quality to it, rather than just kick-ass action alone, "duh" 😎 .

Black Lagoon is one of my top 10 favorite anime as well, but in terms of story, its nothing special. It doesn't really have set story line (although that is something that I really like about it), but rather, its just about a group of mercenaries going around, performing random missions that they are hired for. I also really like Full Metal Panic! (all 3 series/seasons). The ironic thing about it though, is that I am usually not too fond of mecha anime, or anime with mecha in them 😛 .
In terms of story line, Samurai Champloo is good, but I have seen some stories that I like better. For me, there is probably no anime that can top Death Note in terms of story line (however, the Rurouni Kenshin manga, not the anime, is equal to Death Note in terms of story line, IMO).
So, finished Hellsing... It was great, nice action, and interesting story and characters, just right kind of anime for me! 😄
Still, I wont rate it above Black Lagoon, since it was just so cool and kick-ass, and to be honest, the lack of story doesn´t matter at all, it had easily everything needed to make me satisfied. Not saying that Hellsing didn´t though... I know that no-one agrees with me here, storylines seem to be important to most of the people. So maybe I´m just so simple-minded, lol! But the list, updated once again:

Well, story line does matter to me, however if the anime is entertaining enough without it, then I will like it anyways. Black Lagoon is one of my top 10 favorite anime, because it had lots of cool action and characters, and it was overall, a really entertaining series 😎 .

Awesomeness! 😄 Action scenes were better than in TV-series, don´t know about the story though, bit different compared to TV-series, and quite a lot in 3rd episode. Also, there were more sexual content than in TV-series... ;P Ehh, I would rate it above Hellsing TV-series, though it was really short.

Just so you know, the series is still continuing 😛 . They release a new episode once very few months. Its a rediculously long wait, however its definitely worth it 😉 . Also, the next episode in the OVA series is scheduled to come out next month (actually, in just a few weeks, to be more accurate; as long as they don't delay it again 🙄 ) 😎 .
