Actually Nvr, that is not quote true. The reason he killed Death was because he wanted to be a Champion to life and he thought that was what everyone wanted. After MM tried to destroy the flower and told him what a bone-headed thing it was to kill Death he went about bringing her/him back.
In order to bring Death back he had to kill someone to bring the Death manifestation back however, he was still sticking with the champion for life thing. The reason that the person had to be "willing" is that he wanted it to be their choice. I forget whom he was with but that person volunteered to be the sacrificial lamb as it were, to be a somebody.
My point is that the person did not necessarily have to be a willing person, only the Beyonder wanted them to volunteer for it so as to not go against his morals at that time. I would bet money that if the situation was different and he abandoned his morals he would not have had any more trouble in killing him than if he had volunteered.
