So basically what is happening here is-

Steve is uncomfortable with his own feelings towards same sex partners. He doesn't know how to express or how to deal with these feelings, so he projects them onto other people.

Therefore Grey Fox is so-so's boyfriend, or something about a Butt Vein, etc....
