I don't think making sense really mattered to Joe Q. I think the retcon is basically "anything I don't really think is right for Spidey is changed back."

Aunt who's going to have to die eventually and sort of wants to anyway and would probably want you to pick Mary Jane vs. love of your life and wife of many years. Not an obvious choice?
Divorce - bad example for the kids.
Deals with Marvel's Satan so that Pete can screw around with Black Cat - good example for the kids.

I don't mind the changes, I just think it's a really crappy the way they are going about them, and i don't see the point.
Worst thing I suppose though it may take away some of the character depth from Spidey.
I don't mind retcons, no matter how drastic they can be as long as it's told well in a good story. However the problem with one more day, the retcon wasn't told in one good story, the retcon was the the story 🙁
Plus as a fan, now I feel as though I should have skipped around 20 years of Spider-man comics.

Indeed, it makes no sense.
I also think the fan-base has power, they're likely to complain loudly, there are likely a few diehard fans within marvel itself who're likely not too happy with quesada, if they're in a position of power or get to one, he's gonna feel their wrath.
Also most kids nowadays download programs, music, movies, and I'm sure it's not a stretch for them to download comics. Way I see it, it is mostly the collectors and diehards who buy the actual comics... that is the ones who're gonna be bothered by this.
Though then again, DC does get away with the crises, but this is far far more sloppy and out of the blue.
'New' redhead character in gaudy green costume? Bets on whether it's a) Mary Jane or b) the woman who just won't stay dead, Jean Grey. Imagine the latter, Spider-Man riding Phoenix all around the universe in more ways than one; now that will make for some exciting new stories that are fun for all ages.
