He looked behind himself in the first scan ... that's why he said there is nowhere she can hide. Now again, where was she when he turned around after breaking the rock?

In the air behind him since in his mind Superman was fighting doomsday who can't fly.

Too many quotes flying around not to notice some of this exchange ...
Got to say this is actually pretty good reasoning I'm seeing.
Plausible, too, since one of Rucka's goals was apparently to interject as much human realism in this fight as possible.
Thinking of yesterday, for I searched for some old materials in the Superman forum thread of similar name. Stumbled upon a section where someone said it was plausible that, just before pulling out the ring Bruce gave her, Wonder Woman kneed Superman where it counts.
I thought about it and re-examined the artwork.
It actually makes considerable sense. That would explain, why, after being gouged in the EYES, Superman is doubled over as if he were enduring pain to his MIDSECTION. Then I considered Diana's knee in an almost Muay Thai position. That would be consistent with artwork trying to represent her position one second after delivering a knee strike.
Finally, I did a "Paint" enlargement of the panel I was looking at and noticed "impact rays down in the lower left corner. Easy to mistake for the background light the whole scene is washed in.
It all fit.
The poster was probably right.
Whether Rucka or the artists came up with it, everything was consistent with Diana, indeed, kneeing Superman, possibly where it counts, one second before reaching to retrieve Bruce's ring.
