January 6, 2009 - Epic Games is kicking off the new year with a hefty patch for Gears of War 2, one that promises to address ongoing multiplayer bugs, fix persistent glitches, improve the netcode and even add a few achievements for good measure.

In a post on the official Gears of War message boards today, Epic Vice President Mark Rein announced that the title update will be released sometime in January, although no specific date has been nailed down just yet. Rein's post is a laundry list of some of the most glaring problems with Gears 2's multiplayer, including the ability to:

* Wield an invisible shield
* Wield a shield along with a two-handed weapon
* Melee opponents through walls
* Gain infinite Lancer machine gun ammunition
* And "many more"

In addition to these bug fixes, Epic plans to increase penalties for players who quit matches early, add additional spawn protection against planted grenades and chainsaw attacks and include the ability to see the flag carrier position in the Submission mode. Rein also said Epic has fixed the client-side hit detection issues with the Gnasher shotgun, which should improve the weapon's performance in laggy online matches. Along those same lines, a particularly troublesome bug in which non-host Boomshot and shotgun rounds strike the ground (instead of your intended target) when firing from the hip.

There are no specifics on the new achievements yet, but we do know they'll be related to downloadable content. The patch will also increase the frequency of achievement progress notification and add that information to the in-game War Journal.

Rein's forum post hits the high points, but a full list of the update's features hasn't been released yet. And Epic isn't stopping there.

"Once it's done we'll start working on the next update," Rein wrote. "We'll try to do a better job keeping you informed of our progress on future updates and we'll try to be a little more active in the forums once this update is released."

When they make a patch that allaows me to join a game in under 40 seconds I'll care. 😐

I popped in Gears 1 last night after playing 2 for a few days, and I managed to join a match that was a full house in about thirteen seconds. Again, servers > match making.

I agree. I just posted the info for the hardcore Gears fans. Me...I can't stand waiting more than 10 minutes for a match.

It really is a shame about all the little technical problems with Gears 2 matchmaking, when you get into a good game it is great fun.

I dont really like the downed status invulnerability... its anti-climactic

if you get downed from gunfire, I think a sniper should have the right to take you out from there

They can...

Yeah.

I don't want to start shit, but someone read my mind and wrote down exactly how I felt about Gears 2.

must be on certain game modes then.. cuz during a multiplayer match, I'll sometimes try to shoot the enemy from a distance and I'll get some kind of immunity-squeal sound

as for the link.. I personally found the story to be good.. but the dialogue to be mediocre.. most of it was those types of situations where you dont really need dialogue.. but they just say something dumb and pointless to break the silence..

You're playing Execution. In execution you can only kill the enemy from up close.

Ah.. what gametypes do you guys recommend?..havent played much of any of them yet

I like Execution since I PERSONALLY like to fight up close.

However Warzone, which is the default game type and the type you're use to, is fun too.

Meatflag is also fun as well as guardian.

I really need to start playing Multiplayer on this game now.

You can still kill a downed enemy from afar with the sniper rifle, just have to shoot them in the head.

Or just shoot them in the head from the start and it's a one shot kill.

Does anyone wonder why the Locust Queen looks human? I get the feeling that when Epic releases Gears 3, we're gonna know who Marcus' mom is. I figure this because that palace level seemed to hinted some things about Marcus' dad and the queen.

There are theories lurking every corner. 1 of these mentioned something about there being 2 type of Locusts-mindless drones and intelligent humanoid Locust. The latter came to be due to humans experimenting on them after they were found. Apparentely if we follow this logic the queen was the culmination of these experiments. She fled and then waged war against humans.

But before waging war, I bet she met Marcus' dad and they had a child.

Which would make the humans the "evil" side in the war... Interesting.

So the Locust are actually the good guys? If the army knew why Locust are fighting, maybe they'd talk to them or something. Locust still look like the bad guys because have you not seen what they've done to their slaves? Just look at Maria, she looked like a zombie but worse. And Tai, his back was ****** up.

What happened to that COG soldier with the cowboy hat? I played through the entire game and there hasn't been word if he was dead or alive.
