Ubuntu. It's a Linux distribution. Quite great. It takes a little effort to get used to it, but it's totally worth it (especially since it is free).

You don't know much about hardware or software, do you?

It's an operating system (think Windows, if you don't know the term). It is free, got lots of software and an excellent community.

There is a badass video out there on Vista Aero (3d translucent apps) and Linux Ubuntu. Dude, Ubuntu is awesome!

Right now, I am studying for the security+....then it is the Linux+...I can't wait because it is an excuse to play around with Linux OSs.
