He needed to trick Champion into handing the power gem over because he couldnt physically beat him with it.
Thanos took on Thor who was much more of a threat than Champion head on.

DD is beyond what Thanos can dish out on a physical level. There's nothing to argue there. He was so far beyond Superman in pure physicality that even an enhanced Superman didn't want to engage him in direct combat and quite frankly Superman's best feats of strength and power are more impressive than what Thanos can supposedly do. His fighting skill and speed far more impressive.
All Thanos would have is energy based attacks and he doesn't have what it would take to kill HP DD. A being of pure energy couldn't effect him, Darksied's beams had arguably no effect, and all waverider got was feedback... HP DD is >Thanos. The only time Thanos would be a threat to this creature is if he was amped outside of his own capabilities.

Thanos was toying with champion and manhandling him. Then he erected the shields to piss him off into destroying the planet and handing over willingly the power gem. Brilliant.
