The size matters. They are talking about creating back holes that the smaller then a proton. Black holes that small would evaporate almost immediately.

Hs anyone ever seen, measured or been near a black hole, NO!!
In fact they might not even exist, so any attempted FACTUAL comments concerning what would happen etc are pointless. Its all theory.
The problem is the scientists at CERN are behaving like good cop bad cop.
One day one says something like "oh nothing will happen its all under control, we know what we are doing he computer models have proved this that and blah blah" etc.
The next day another says "we don´t really know what we are doing, its all theoretical stuff, anything can happen".
Of course you can quote websites youtube videos, but there are for and against cases as far as what Ive seen.

Look, clearly you are scared because you know nothing about particle physics, just let the scientists do there jobs and we can worry about it if some thing does happen.

The LHC could change our understanding of the universe and be the kick start to creating all sorts of wonderful technology that we can't even imagine right now. It is deffinatley worth the risk because there is none. If you worry about the LHC and what it is going to do then you might as well never leave your house, wrap your self in bubble wrap and sit in a chair for the rest of your life as your more likely to die from a random accident than the LHC creating a black hole which will destroy the Earth.

Seen? Yes.
Measured? Yes, in terms of mass and gravitational pull.
Been near? Yes, modern physics has very good basis for saying they occur constantly on a very small scale.

Gravity is all theory too. It remains very reasonable to make predictions based on it nonetheless.
we just recently took the most high resolution shots of the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. There was enough detail to show the event horizon.

also, to say a black hole with enough mass to do any damage could form here is, quite literally, arguing against e=mc2
basically, mass is equal to energy
the energy created in the LHC (given all energy is controlled for in the experiment) wouldn't be enough to form a black hole any larger than one that might absorb immediately nearby atoms, then evaporate.
Provided black holes are created by large energy/mass (which is the only way it makes sense that one might form in the LHC) we can be relatively sure that we can predict what size those black holes might be given how much energy is in the system.
I think this is all very exciting, ime not worried of being destroyed instantly in a flash of light, this world has had its time, but I dont think Blackholes are the only thing threatening the world, I mean seriously their creating basically a Big bang in a tube are they not? I think theres far more implications than a human can possibly think of that could come out of doing this that we could be threatened by thousands of things that we may not even realise.

if it destroys the planet it would be, you just get shreded, the hole would have such a high gravity and coming into excistance so near the Earth should just instantly rip the Earth to pieces like a fresh egg in a blender
Not really. If they somehow formed a blackhole that was just big enough to destroy the Earth you'd probably first notice when all contact was lost with CERN, followed by an apology hours later. After that Europe and Russia would be destroyed which pull the Pacific, and everything in or on it, into the black hole. By that point the rest of the world would have noticed that the planet's orbit was off and the sun would look bigger. At some point the gravity would make the moon's orbit decay and either smash it into the planet or directly into the black hole. Environmental disaster would have rapidly broken out along with "end times" looting.
And then the planet would be pulled into oblivion.

the coolest thing about getting sucked into a black hole would be the massive differences in gravity between your head and your feet as you go in head 1st...it would stretch you into weird shapes
anyone watching from the outiside would see this happening in slow motion until you hit the event horizon at which point you would appear frozen in time...at least from an observers POV...
