Delph's League of Champions Season One Discussion Thread

Started by leonidas198 pages

i've not seen or heard from scoob in weeks. the next 2 weekends fri-sun i'm outta town (which is why i went into this with a partner in the first place.

if you wanna name smurf and bw champs, i'm fine with that. it's been so long now that a lot of the whole tourny momentum has been sapped from me anyway. if scoob can get on, i'll still do it, but at this point do what you gotta do delph, no worries.

I approve of this.

Hmm...

***Official Announcement***

Due to numerous scheduling conflicts and delays, I'm officially declaring Leonidas and Scoobless as the Season One League Champions by technical decision.

Congrats.

I'll update the standings soon.

Can I ask how you came to that conclusion? Scoobs is not around, Smurph is banned, but I am still here and so is Leo.

Me and Smurph were just discussing what we were going to do for it, to finally get the ball rolling even if it was me vs Leo.

Joel (Smurph) says:
wtf? why?

Leo vs Blair sounds fine, I think.

Sure.

Here's the chain of posts that led to my decision:

Thanks.

Blair, as far as I know, has lost all internet service and won't regain it for a long, long time... or, at least, that's what he told me might happen last we spoke, and he hasn't posted in here since- though I haven't been on MSN or KMC for a week or so.

I get back from my vacation on the 4th... if you want me to do a write up, I'll need a little bit more time. If we've already had enough delays, then I can forfeit. I don't have a lot of drive left to be honest, but I'm good either way. Mind you, having a match between Digi and Charlotte to preempt the finals would be a pretty large delay, so I don't think one or two days would be a huge deal.

That was from December 31st.

i'm fine if it's only a minor delay of a couple days. i'm sure scoob is all right as well. something like the friday? that's the 9th i think and should give loads of time?

the next question is the format. 7 or 10 days? preferences smurph?

I do not have internet access at this moment in time. (I'm at my cousin's house which is the only reason I am on).

I'm not sure if I will have access next week, being that I will either be staying at my house (with no service) or be at school again (with service). If I cannot get back to the university (blood sucking, money collecting university that it is....) I wont be able to participate. So if you see me around next week, I can help Smurph out. Simple as that I guess.

That was the next day (January 1st).

In the festive spirit, my internet seems to be f**ked, hopefully it'll be back up by Friday (or soon afterwards)

This was on January 7th (a week after the initial delay).

Im back. Ill have to talk to Smurph, and I know we have already dragged it out forever, but dragging it out more cant hurt anyone its the last damn match anyways. Ill get back with a timetable

That was from January 15th (a week ago).

This is from January 20th (2 days ago).

Today is January 22nd.

I decided to appoint Team Leo/Scoob as champions because the initial delays were caused by Team BDub/Smurph, Smurph had already offered forfeiture on December 31st due to the delays before Leo followed suit 2 days ago, and the proposed 1/9 start date was also missed. This thing has dragged out long enough, so I made an executive decision.

damn, I just wanted to see some more Scoob-Leo banter...

Imo, we just finished the finals

...not because Smurph/Blair weren't worthy finalists. They are. But because of all the delays, if's, and's, and buts that surrounded scheduling up until and through the playoffs. I didn't know that it would turn out this way. But it wasn't hard to predict.

Ah well. Anti-climactic, to say the least. But I'm not sure how it would've gone any better with different scheduling and/or decisions, so it may not have been avoidable.

Once we hit the holiday things began to drag. There was people on vacation, people lacking Internet access, temporary bans from the board, etc. If we could have adhered to my original scheduling this could have been over 2 weeks ago. I don't mind making accommodations for people's schedules (as I'd done throughout the regular season), but it's been about a month since the last match. Time to shut things down and discuss working out the kinks for the future so that this doesn't occur again (though scheduling conflicts are pretty much inevitable).

...right right. Eh, live and learn. Still stinks, but like you said it is sometimes inevitable.

Actually I want to say and talk about the form of this tourney. The everyone must face everyone style. Is it me or does it seem flawed or unable to work with our tournies?

The format is based on a Fantasy Sports League. It's not a regular "tournament".

I know what the format is based on.

My question is that does it work in our tourney mindset, organization, expectations?

No offense to you. I think your idea is great, and I love it. I would have competed had I the resources available.

But that is twice now you attempted to run a tourney in this format. Both times I think we can agree that they have not ended in a stellar way. One tourney not being finished, and now season one ending in an executive decision to determine the winner.

I'm just trying to to get people's comments on how viable this way of doing it is. I am after all trying to run my own tourney eventually, and I just want to see options, and opinions of them.

I hear you. I think the biggest issue has been time commitments moreso than the format itself. Combatants and Judges have school/work, Judges get delayed with their decisions, or wait until the last minute to read the match rather than following it as it progresses due to more important real life responsibilities, and then on top of that you factor in that the tournament took place in the Fall when we have the most holidays which entail family gatherings, vacations, etc. (Thanksgiving, Xmas, New Years, winter break from school, etc) and, well, this is the result.

Last time I ran a tourney (on HoZ) the issue was I didn't have enough reliable judges and things grinded to a halt. This time I had plenty of judges, but combatant's scheduling conflicts caused the competition to halt. Maybe shortening it to 4-5 pre-playoff matches.

Joel says

I don’t really understand why though, Delph. I mean, I realize that it’s dragged on for too long, but I know that Blair and I were actually really close to being able to start… why make this tourney end like your last tourney when we’re so close?

It’s just a shame, is all, and ending it now doesn’t seem to be solving any problems, unless Leo and Scoob don’t want to have the match anymore… I don’t really see how having this match up at all hinders the discussion for season 2, or for any future tourneys. Nothing imminent should be waiting on this match, so there's no reason it shouldn't go on, is there?

Guy, tell Smurph I'll talk to him on MSN when I get home from work.

He can still read posts 😂
