Illadelph's Tournament Odds Thread

Started by Faux Smurph15 pages

It'd also, if made public enough, have a chance to draw out more potential tourney competitors.

We could use some more flavor.

That's the idea of the respect thread in general. By cataloguing everything, creating a history, it should have a positive effect of participation. PR, basically.

Though I'm not entirely sure it has worked. Tourneys seem slightly less well-attended than some of yesteryear. I always encourage those who have won *coughBlairandScoobcough* to host a tourney or two, or judge and such. Or even skilled competitors in general, not just those two. Or frequent judges to enter (there's plenty who could step in and do well, but don't). Because I think part of the problem for newcomers is the incredibly steep learning curve for tourneys we've created. Even being experienced in the vs. forum isn't enough anymore to mire through the complex rule structures, insane battle plans, and psychotically thorough research. So if a newb comes in, means well, and knows comics, but understandably loses convincingly in their first tourney or two, it doesn't promote repeat entries, nor interest. It's not impossible to compete and win in such a setting, but we're not making it easy either, even for dedicated newcomers.

I think we'd do well to ban entries from anyone who has previously participated for a tourney or two. Seriously. Make an all-newcomer tourney. In the long run I think it would up the competition and interest.

don't think there's enough people for that to be a reality

Possibly, but I think you also underestimate the number of people on the forum. Keep in mind, the current tourney only has 7 teams (though, granted, a few more participants because of partners). I can list about 5 judges alone who are respected and intelligent, but have never entered. And that's not even delving further into the forum's numbers.

Make it a non-partner tourney and 8 wouldn't be hard to do, if it was advertised properly.

But it was mainly a hypothetical. I realize it's not likely to happen in reality, even though I think it could haev positive benefits for us in the long run.

Once I've made my fortune and have some free time to devote to KMC .... I might start entering more tourneys.

😐

(and possibly hosting one or two)

I've got ideas for hosting one, but it always seems like a pain in the ass

Plus I'd want to participate in it.

Hosting's no cakewalk...

Heh. What ill said. Takes a brass set, more random character knowledge than you thought you'd ever be expected to know, and truckloads of patience.

Batdude might have actually run the smoothest tourney I can remember, though I haven't been intimately involved with all of them. ill does a good job too, better than most, and the last tourney was a variety of things that led its collapse, and shouldn't be put on his shoulders.

I probably have an inflated sense of my own skills, because my own tournaments were less than ideal. The 2nd one only ran smoothly because I ignored it once battles started, letting any possible controversies play out on their own. But my mistakes led to a lot of the reformations we've had in more recent tournaments. So I feel like I'd host well now, but I sucked something awful when I started my first tourney (the "street" amalgam one).

Nothing really needs to be added to that.

Yeah ... I'm drunk again ... what's your point?

4 posts in a row ... nice! 👆

ANYWAYS 🙄

Before votes come in, but after seeing initial battles take place, anyone have certain odds?

I was waiting to bump this until the judges vote. Our opinions on the matches don't mean a whole lot. Their's do. To me, that's what will change the odds.

I have my personal opinions, having read most of the other two matches besides my own, but I'll keep them to myself for the time being.

Yes...even supposed outsider can bite back pretty well, given a chance...
Given judges votes and standings, we'll talk...

At the weekend I'll be at my cousin's wedding, but did as much of research on fangirl's roster as I could in short time after roster change was posted.

just so's everyone knows who's on whose team.

Week 2 matchups:

Charlotte vs. fangirl - Charlotte has to have the edge due to her round 1 performance. But fangirl should be back home with his scans, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Digi vs. KFish - Until proven otherwise, Digi remains the favorite. A good round one showing by KFish, albeit in a 3-0 loss, doesn't mean he can be favored over a strong team.

Leo/Scoob vs. Kandy/id - Leo/Scoob's opening schedule is brutal. And Kandy/id got to sit back and watch during week 1. If they've prepped well, they'll be a tough out. Simply because of their rep, and their hard-fought match in round 1, Leo/Scoob are the favorites. But I'm calling an upset watch on this one.

Robin and Batgirl have the week off.

I expect good matches all-around, and likely some improvement from those whose round 1 performance was lacking.

I'll try and do my best not to disappoint you. I got sick so my performance won't be that good. Also found a few interesting scans that would be pretty helpful there.
