I think they were referring to Justin Hammer, not H.A.M.M.E.R. He's the rival industrialist who partners with Whiplash in the film.

Here's a story exploring Scarlett Johansson's role:

Note to the haters who say she will do a terrible accent - she how she confirms why the accent is probably not necessary. Just like I've been saying.

great read, i believe johannson will do just fine

Oh, that's ok then.

Scarlett Johansson offered up a reason why an integral trait of a specific character isn't necessary, so that means we're all wrong for wanting it to be there.

Being Russian is a specific part of who she is as a character. Do you even know about Black Widow?

Such a bullshit excuse; "You're not covert if you're speaking in a Russian accent.". It's 2010, nobody actually thinks you're a spy just because you have an accent.

"It would be a dead giveaway.". True, because the Wondercon picture of you being Black Widow, and it being confirmed that you are Black Widow, didn't give us enough of a clue as to who you'd be playing.

Natasha Romanoff...the American?

I understand the idea of using an American accent as a spy method, but only if we actually see her use her natural accent in other parts. If they're trying to say she's Russian, but we never hear her speak Russian or with an accent, then they're taking too many liberties.

At least admit she can't do the accent. At least be gutsy enough to say: "We're not having her do the accent.". To make up all this bull is just like Hugh Jackman trying to convince us it was ok to make Sabretooth Wolverine's brother.

Yes - I've been reading her in various forms since the 1980's. And as I've said previously in this thread, because she's a spy that should mean she shouldn't have a strong accent. Defeats the purpose of blending in don't you think, to have a new employee sound like she's right out of Boris & Natasha.
That has nothing to do with her background, either. She should still be Russian or Eastern European birth; her occupation should make her sound unlike that, is all.
So f**k off with your condescension and actually think before you speak.

Yeah, because all Russians sound madly stereotypical, don't they?

They all sound like Boris and Natasha, there's no such thing as a noticeable accent that's not borderline parody.

Honestly, stop making excuses because she has a rack. It's silly.

Notice the Russian spies in Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull? Stood out like sore thumbs, with their stereotypical accents. Do you want a cartoon, or do you want something approaching reality?

1. They were supposed to be campy and stereotypical.

2. Do you actually think all people in Russia speak like that? Are you serious?

It doesn't need to sound ridiculous because not all Russian accents do.

What part of my sarcasm didn't you get? It doesn't need to sound ridiculous.

It's like talking to a wall.

-AC

No if it was like talking to a wall you'd be funny like the mechanicals in a Midsummer Nights Dream!!!!!

Well, now I don't know what to make of your opinion. You're made a case for why she should sound very Russian, and why she shouldn't.
Pick one. 🙄 Because I have.

Oh dear.

Ok, once more. I've not made a case for her to be anything besides Russian OR have a Russian accent, seeing as the actress isn't Russian.

YOU are the one fixed on a stereotypical accent, incapable of comprehending that an accent doesn't have to be stereotypical.

That's not "very Russian", that's parody.

Do you actually understand?

Forget Natasha and Boris, forget the ones from the Indy movie. Those were intended to be campy and stereotypical, not an actual, realistic Russian accent.

-AC

I think, as a spy, and someone given intensive training - physical and mental - Natasha should be able to make her voice sound like what's best for her situation. If she's undercover somewhere in North America, she would attract less notice if she sounds like a native to that area.

This is very simple. You seem to think if she plays the part without an accent of some kind, she's not really doing the character justice. I'm saying she would be doing exactly what her character would. Infiltrating Stark Industries and impressing Tony goes easier, without him wondering about who this Euro hottie is and where she came from.

Why am I repeating things you should understand?

As I said before, if she uses an American accent to infiltrate, but we hear her natural accent at another time or in another scene, I don't mind that. It has purpose and it shows they're not trying to make her out to be some American character, or Americanised character.

IF she never uses her natural accent once, OR her natural accent is said to be American, that's not good because that's not who she is.

Hammer Industries is creating their own version of Iron Man in the comic, called Detroit Steel. Justin Hammer's daughter is running the company now. That's all it is. Nothing to do with Norman Osborn's H.A.M.M.E.R.

You don't know they have made her American at all. I don't believe they have. It's not like they made Mickey Rourke play his role as an American. And his character isn't a spy, either.
But you seem to have made up your mind, without hearing even a few words out of the Black Widow's mouth.

lmao i was very upset when i thought they meant H.A.M.M.E.R

it made me mad because i thought they were gonna ruin the movie....but at the same time i kinda expected them to do that because i figured they were just gonna throw it in to give it a comic book feel...like they tend to do to ruin movies......if you know what im saying.

I'll wait to see what they do before I judge.

If they do keep her Russian and keep her accent, only rrvealing it when she isn't trying to infiltrate, fine. It's a plot point.

If they don't have her use the accent at all, I won't like it.

I think the debate now is, what shades of grey this Black Widow inhabits; the above article speculates about that. In the Ultimate Universe, she turns out to be a traitor. But if something like that happens in Iron Man 2 - she works for SHIELD but is secretly working under someone more villainous - that would kill the notion of a spin-off movie or appearance in the Avengers.

Hmmm....
