The thing is, it was thor who had the power gem, a character that is already just a notch below superman strengthwise. Even before his obtaining the power gem, he was amped thanks to his madness and was capable of taking out surfer, BRB and the infinity watch easily. He was then further amped by the power gem. So at that point he was certainly above superman strengthwise by quite a bit.

Granted, the heros ultimately lost that fight, but Thanos had the IG, and he was still getting battered around. IIRC, that was Masterson Thor, who has little physical comparison to Superman.

Above is Thanos' first appearance. His strength and struggle with Drax's literally destroys a planet. Since Thanos won that fight, we can safely assume that his strength contributed at least 51% to the planet's destruction.
