I always play some sort of magical character. Once you get to higher levels you are hilariously more powerful than the fighters and rogues in your party. There is even a trope for it:

Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards

There is a D&D entry on there.

^ Wouldn't they have a way of balancing that out? Stat trees and such that balance mages, warriors, rogues?

I never fully got into them, but I liked their overall sound and style

An example of that would be a wizard, who have absolutely shocking HP. Without the powerful warriors up front, they'd be ****ed.

That being said, at higher levels they have spells that can protect them. So maybe not.

Eh no, it kinda is balanced in a way I guess though. Magical characters are incredibly weak at lower levels. Fighters can wade into battle and endure a lot of punishment. The trade off is later on the mage becomes more powerful.

To be fair, a fully-levelled Fighter can attack a maximum of 8 times in one turn, which is insane

Then I guess you would balance it by making magic resistant creatures then?

Yeah, but not only do high level mages have access to various protection spells...they can stop time lol.
