We did have a plan to invade Japan in November of 1945. The excuse for the bombs was that they projected 100,000 or more deaths in the invasion for our side. To put that in perspective, the total death tolls for the entire war for both the UK and USA were under 500,000.
I would argue yes if we had no choice but to invade the bomb would have been better. It just seems like we didn't have to do either. Afterwards Truman kept changing the number of soldiers that would have died...increasing the number.
IMO if FDR had lived the nukes would not have been dropped. FDR also made promises to Russia concerning what would happen after the war ended and Truman did not keep those promises. And I gotta say, Russia is owed a bigger debt than anyone over WW2. 20 million dead compared to less than 500k for the other allies. 2/3 of their country devastated.

Yet we could have had a friendlier relationship with them, but Truman turned out to be a weasel.

Get yourself some netflix. FDR was a great man, we had him as president for 12 years.
You should look up Henry Wallace too, another great man who is not well known. He was FDR's VP from 41 to 45. In 1945 others pushed him out, FDR was in a very weakened state at the time and unfortunately just sort of let it happen. And the VP was essentially stolen from him because he should of won...there was a whole situation where they purposely called the end of a vote early, etc. it's a long story, but yeah. He definitely would not have nuked Japan if he became president.
