Tbh, that doesn't really justify anything. Japanese need to get better at writing stories. 😐

It's not that it's bad, it's that Japanese culture values different things, like symbolism and introspection. Neither form is inferior to the other, they're just different methods of going about it.
Oh come on guys, be reasonable! A comparison to PORTAL? Portal, like Braid, is a budget game designed from the ground up to be completed in one or two sittings. If it was a full price game than it DEFINITELY would have been hammered on length.
This is not that- it is a full price game and it must be rated alongside the criteria of other such games. You are all fooling yourselves if you think being short is some sort of gameplay schtick- no, it is just that the game does not have a huge amount of content, and once more, that IS a valid reason for criticism. Frankly, saying otherwise makes you look a bit foolish, as does resorting to "that's just an opinion." No it is not. A shortness of a game is an objective critical point. Prince of Persia games have a tendency towards shortness also, and again that is a legitimate criticism. It doesn't ruin the game, but it can be said against it. That is all this comes down to- those of you trying to deny this are just trying to ignore reality. Some games are good despite the odd shortcoming, you know? A fan of a game should accept it. Aggressively rejecting it is the worst possible position, worthy of the least respect.
That some games are also too long for their own good is in no way a virtue of shortness, it is a criticism of 'empty' length- that is to say, length that was not based on any intrinsic value. That's an even bigger criticism of a game, for sure, but the solution is not 'games should be short'. It is "Game length needs to be based on tengible content."
Other than that, Cyner, I am not going to argue the individual points as I've not played through myself. I am simply informing you what others have said and why it is getting lower scores. You will also have to accept you are in a minority in saying it is as good as Prime. An extreme minority. And I am someone who thought Prime was overrated (being a vision not fully realised until Corruption, where it was a little late in the day), and you never know, I might rate this game higher. None of that changes the central point about length as a criticism.
I also think you are off-course calling the linear criticisms preposterous, GK. The first three Metroids were famously non-linear and Fusion did get a lot of stick for guiding you precisely where you were going next, which the series had not done before. I'm not so sure that's a bad thing- I think non-linearity can be overrated- but it is something that was not there in the originals, so to mention it is hardly preposterous.
But what is clear is that a lot of people are losing their objectivity and ability to be reasonable when it comes to this game, it seems.

If Other M didn't have Adam telling you where you should go next for story purposes, there would be no accusations of linearity. You are free at any time to run around the ship to any area your current equipment lets you access. I am in fact doing that now, taking a break from the story to canvass the ship for items now that I have a majority of the upgrades. There are no restrictions other than the usual Metroid style of not having the right tool for the job yet. Prime was just as "linear" with its hint system that gently guided you to the next important location you were equipped to enter.
Actually, all of my opinions are based around the merits of how games should be rated, which makes them very much first hand. I have studiously kept away from actually applying or making any criticism of the game itself- I don't need to have done that to know poor quality commentary when I see it. The merits of criticisms of the game are very much within the wherewithal of the topic, and I am very much entitled to point these things out.
If any of you want to defend against negative criticisms of the game on the grounds that they are not true, that's great. But when you start defending it on the basis of untrue comparisons (e.g. early Metroid games were linear) or simple biased nonsense (Metroid games are in some way immune to criticisms of shortness) then these things are going to be refuted.
Ush, it really just depends on the person. Personally the short game that has lots of replayability is what really makes the series for me. It's the reason I haven't finished a FF game since 8. I just don't like really really long games. I'd rather have one that I can get through relatively quickly but has lots of replayability. Metroid series fills that niche very nicely and I'm sure any game in the Metroid main series will continue that tradition. Sure you CAN criticize it for being short but if you don't know what to expect from Metroid at this point then you've been doing it wrong. This is in fact the longest Metroid main series game by far, so there's no doubt they were seeking to please those who had complained in the past about the shortness of the Metroid series.
Ok I just want to complain about the one part of the game that I thought was just bad. DO NOT HIGHLIGHT UNLESS YOU LIKE SPOILERS
Spoiler:
Ok when Adam shot Samus and it paralyzed her and made her suit turn off... WTF was that? Where did this magical weapon come from? Maybe I need to rewatch the clip or something but apparently Ridley a highly intelligent space pirate commander can't defeat Samus but Adam has a magic Malkovich gun which renders Samus helpless. If someone has an answer please explain. Dumb PIS is dumb.

That bugged the hell out of me as well.
Spoiler:
So I checked the little "story" item on the menu and it turns out it was just a freeze gun. Seriously. Granted, those things can apparently one-shot a fully armored GF trooper (ie: death of Maurice) and make MB brittle enough for bullets to kill her. Then again, the first ****ing boss requires dozens of shots to freeze a single arm. Samus getting destroyed by one shot just shouldn't happen. If anyone tries to use this against her, I'd do one of two things: 1. Point out the fact that Samus' suit is held together by concentration and anything that disrupts that might cause it to waver, such as the fact that there are Metroids on the Bottle Ship. 2. Fusion's Varia Suit makes ice worthless.

Spoiler:
I wouldn't say anything that forces her to lose concentration. Just anything that relapses her PTSD IE only Ridley or makes her really sad about how her only baby was murdered since apparently she can't have kids
Who says she can't have kids? Not that I would want/encourage it.
Also,
Spoiler:I didn't completely follow.
was I the only one confused as to who the traitor or "deleter" of the Federation turned to be? Like, who was it exactly? Was it the same soldier who threw one of the other soldiers into that lava pit?
