Should death be permanent?

I just want to know people's opinion on this subject. Should death be permanent in comics. Or at least longer then 2-3 years. The word dead hero doesn't mean the same anymore. Characters are getting revived so fast. It destroyed the point of "death". I would love to see characters start dying and not come back for a LONG time.

Everyone in JLA died at least once before. This isn't counting the WF, or any other character who blew up the multiverse in on attack(spectre, AM, Parrlax, M.Fantastic, Thanos..etc.).

So what are you opinions?

It should be permanet.

Or at the very least take 5 years of them being dead. if they must be brought back i would say 10 or more though, but 5 I can deal with

DC has been making fun of death as a concept since Blackest Night started.

it depends. But Steve Rogers should hvae stay dead.

From a business stand point I don't think it's very profitable to kill characters permanently especially popular ones. That's why you see so many old heroes comic back after years of being dead or trapped<Like Barry and Hal>.

But the death do seem pointless when it's overdone. You get the "Dragonball" feel where your sad but you know they will be revived sooner or later. 5-10 years sounds about right.

Exactly! In Dbz, if a character died, it wouldn't matter. I mean we saw Vegeta, and Goku died countless of times. Probably 5 times each. Not only that, but the entire planet was destroyed a few times too. After a while, it's pointless to call it death. You might as well call it a hospital.

As for Dc and it's blackest night. I think it good. There is a reason why the dead are rising. Nevertheless, they don't act like them self's. It's like they are new characters.... almost

I agree with the Dragonball thing ^

As for comic characters dying, then being resurrected and that deal, I'm not a huge fan of it. That said, some of the stories that feature characters coming back are great (Colossus - Astonishing X-Men, Hal Jordan - Rebirth), so I don't mind.

When you bring a character back, you run the risk of lessening the impact/importance of their death. And if not done well, it can seem cheap,as if it's just a ploy to rake in the dough.

So, for me, in the realm of comic books, death shouldn't always be permanent, but there better be some good reasoning as to why someone's being brought back and if it's utilized as part of telling a great story, I'll be more inclined to be okay with it.

death should be permenant and they should stick to one version of characters as well. i know it gets a little more entertaining with superman prime and PC superman and stuff but would keep stories more straight if they just stuck to one version of them. like theres savage hulk and WWH and many others

Saying it should be permanent is frankly unrealistic for the companies. They would either not be able to kill anyone "important" thus robbing comics of some of the suspense. Or they could kill them, never bring them back, and crush their sales in the process. You'd either have a bland genre incapable of hooking readers or one that would soon drive itself to bankruptcy.

Of course, short runs and indie titles would thrive. So it wouldn't all be bad. But the industry as a whole would suffer, because indie labels' ability to exist is dependent largely on the main companies attracting enough customers to fill the more nuanced niches that indie titles provide.

It shouldn't always be permanent(since that could keep us waiting indefinitely for stories that might never actually happen), but it should be permanent at least once in a while.

It shouldn't be permanent. It restricts the possibilities featuring great return stories. If comics decided that as of next year, characters would remain dead, then this year would involve bringing back as many characters as possible so they wouldn't have to worry about missing someone (which is possibly what Blackest Night is).

I'd rather be complaining because characters have died and come back too often rather than complaining because a certain character is dead and that they won't feature in any stories again. Plus, like SnakeEyes said, there have been some really good resurrection story lines.

It should be MORE lengthy than it is.

I mean, Death of Superman would have been way more impactful had they not brought him back so soon.

Though I do think Captain America's death has been handled well.

Depends. Some characters, like Jean Gray, always die and come back and it makes sense (with the whole Phoenix motif)

Death should be as permanent and final in comic land as it is in real life, otherwise it can't possibly have the same level of dramatic impact...though given all the cosmics and gods and whatnot out there, it does kind of make sense that it wouldn't be.

Perhaps the rule should be that characters get to die and come back only once.

It's fantasy and science fiction....why limit things to death?

My answer is no....we have enough death in real life...i can suspend my disbelief enough to be thrilled or scared for my characters..its comic books after all......and to me...i dont see the value in doing it......we can have different artist and writers taking on all sorts of charcters..... but not if they are dead!

It depends on the comic.

I like to believe that some characters should be beyond death. It's like Starlock and WD said. Why limit your fantasy and imagination to death? it works in some comics, but not in others.

I guess it is true that some characters have good explanation (Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Jean..etc), and some have too be brought back because of what they do for the company ($). However, not all characters have this kind of justification. Some characters could stay dead and it really wouldn't effect the company much.

Although I don't know the story about Firestorm, but I like how they replaced him with a newer version. This allows the character to have a new story, new life..etc.

I hate the fact that they can't let semi-important characters die anymore. Let Jay die, let someone die and don't bring them back. Characters that are important (Superman, Thor.etc) should be brought in a few years, but with a good story behind it.

I don't know if you guys read Manga like Naruto, but when a characters dies in their series it's over. There is almost no chance of them coming back. It add to the intensity of the plot. When one of the characters(both evil and good) die, the fans vry in tears. I was soo mad when I favorite character died.

it all the depends on the lameness of it...or lack thereof...some resurrections have been handled masterfully..eg... Bucky Barnes ..sorry but a displaced cap being plucked out of the timestream is lame to me...Oliver Queen goin to heaven, and turning it down cuz he felt like he had "unfinished" business, equally lame..

nope comics shouldnt make death permanent, but they shouldnt be so willy nilly about bringing ppl back either, at least be creative about it for f ****s sake, your professional writers!!!

Yeah, if death was permanent then there is no fun with zombies or ressurections....
