I do understand that stigma means more than having a hate crime committed against you, but that's really the only kind of tangible evidence or empirical data I could come across, and frankly anything other than those numbers is personal opinion. How do you know gays have it harder than blacks, or blacks have it harder than hispanics outside of hate crimes? Dude, it honestly has nothing to do with being badass. I'm not badass, but I've had a lot of shit thrown my way, losing a bunch of family, having to live with relatives that made my life miserable, until I said fck you and left at 15. Had to support my mom and myself when she got laid off from work when I was in my last 3 years of college, by getting a full time job. Had to take shitty jokes from college profs, as well as classmates and I took 'em like a man, then when payday came and I graduated, told 'em all to **** themselves cause I by then had 3 years worth of advertising under my belt while they were preppy shitstains. That doesn't even begin to cover the crap with communism.
So when I hear somebody go "well they're ostracized and it's hard for them" it just makes me think they're fckin pathetic. Gays are not the only ones that have to go through hardships.

its hard to say, this is probably not the type of subject that lends itself to generalizations, but yes, I would think so.
Think of it like anorexia. For some reason, the person's self image is distorted to make them feel that they are fat, or have no valuable place in the universe, even in the face of empirical evidence to the contrary.
iirc it is related to, among other things, very early attachment with parents, the types of reinforcements used in child rearing, then so many social things with peers and what not.
