Prime was badass, but too badass.

In the '80s movie he had a fight with Megatron (THE fight with Megatron) that was a culmination of the whole war at that point. He still had a high degree of honour, even though it ultimately cost him his life.

Prime in Revenge of the Fallen seemed to go beyond heroism with his violence. It seemed as though, at times, he was getting off on how violent he was. I heard that somewhere and I agree.

Agreed.

Particularly at the start of the film. The two Decepticons weren't doing shit, just chilling. Then Prime comes and shoots dead a helpless and defeated Decepticon, asking "Any last words?". Not very hero-like.

Now that you mention it, I do recall Optimus' motto on his tech specs being:

"Freedom to be shot through the head is the right of all sentient beings."
