Collapsing the caves/tunnels, was that it?

Nope.

Escape route?

How do you mean?

As in, perhaps the network of caves down there lead out of the prison/mine at that level.

"What do you mean by 'out'?" asks Almir. "I mean, go through enough caves and you wouldn't really be in the mine any more."

As in, perhaps the network of caves down there lead out of the prison/mine at that level.

Well, again, define 'out'. As Almir says, you could find any number of caves down there that can;t be considered part of the mine/prison.

Out as in back to the surface.

"Hmm," says Almir, looking at it all. "Well... POSSIBLY>.. hard to be certain... but some of these crevasses look like they were formed by surface water... which would imply that some of them down there do eventually lead up to the surface..."

"So it's possible that someone could get out of the actual prison that way?"

"... well if he could breathe for long enough, I suppose..."

How far is it without air, Almir?

"Hard to say until you are down there; you'd have to spot the right sort of crevasse. Too long by any sane reckoning."

"'Sane' isn't a word I'd use to describe us," Galder says. "Now it's just a matter of whether or not we think Kuylen made it out."

Just a thought, but if there is a possible way through then air must also travel through, it may be stale but should be breathable enough to survive!

Sadly no; breathable air does not extend into deep cave systems.

Does Almir think that, between our ability to hold our breaths and the amount of air we have, that we'd be able to get out through the caves?

"I'm a geologist, not a physiologist," he says.
