He was feeding on all reality. By universe they meant omniverse. Just like thanos with the heart of the universe was said to only have the power of universe.

and it would be pretty stupid to destroy the universe that he was feeding on in order to save it wouldn't ya say?

why would he destroy the universe that he was feeding on in order to save it? Simple, he was eating alot more than a single universe and so he stopped himself from eating all time and space(again it was mentioned).

Galactus eats the BM or ultimately nullifies him. Then proceeds to kill Mxy and then goes to eat the fifth dimension. and then kills Imperiex just for the lulz.

I mean afterall the imps were scared shitless of the AM.

Some people need to work on their reading comprehension. During the entirety of the Black Celestial arc, Galactus did not so much as consume a single universe. Sure there was some talk pertaining to what he might be able to eventually do -- but said speechification never came into fruition, I'm afraid. What we know for sure is that Galactus was destroyed when he used UN to erase the single universe he resided in.

We also know that Bat-Mite is capable of easily destroying universes (and apparently Spectre as well):

Furthermore, Bat-Mite was literally unscathed by Mxy's final onslaught which, for all intents and purposes, nullified the entirety of DC:
