I agree with Lestov's review, for the most part.
I gave it an 8 out of 10. It could have been better in some areas but it could have been much worse.
Spoiler:
I wish they would not have used the "from earth" origin for the Kaiju. That made it much less believable especially the part about the "earth was 10 times more radioactive then than it is now" bullshit. Even if it was 10 times more radioactive, that's the same as walking up a mountain to about 2000 feet, now. They should have made them aliens.

Thank goodness, I don't wanna have to sit through the credits, usually scenes after the credits are worth the wait but the waiting is still a pain
Tell me about it, I waited through the crédits to learn there was not any scene at the end and those crédits were long as _uck.

IDK if that's really spoiler territory. Godzilla has always been a prehistoric terrestrial creature (except for when he was an irradiated iguana). The arguable point of Godzilla is that there are forces on Earth beyond our control, that nature's true dominant species are far beyond us. But as you stated, their justification of the MUTO's nuclear antics was indeed somewhat flimsy. I was able to suspend my disbelief though.
Have you ever seen Gareth Edwards' Monsters? I think you would enjoy that film. It's on Netflix if you have that service.

Some of you aren't giving PR the credit it deserves. Nothing even close to it has been done in the big screen at that scale, it was a feat of world building and color. Obviously the goal was sheer entertainment, but the movie delivered.Godzilla in the other hard is a very enjoyable movie... Specially when you ignore the other 10 Godzilla movies that exist with similar plots and varying success on the formula. This movie, as great as it is, has been done to death. And better. But as a rendition of the genre I'm all behind it, and I'm glad that people are giving it props, because Godzilla IS good enough to gather recognition 👆

Well you can only do so much with a small budget. I felt it was imaginative and plotted well.
The movie, imo, suffered from the budget. It was just too epic of a story to have the film turn out as it did. The movie seemed to be aware of it's shitty budget too superficially (as opposed to other lower-budget films who do well to hide the fact that they had a low budget and still succeed in delivering a quality product). So much so that it detracted from the ability to deliver a quality and engrossing flick. It just fell short of being a great film. This is why I gave it a 6 out of 10.
