A human being without prejudice would be someone I would like to meet....and then infect them with prejudice 😈Ah, a Spanish market area is actually a pretty cool place to shop at. I remember one in San Antonio (when I chose to stomach a visit to 😘 Texas).

This is all I'm saying. Why? See, this is the problem I have with the subject at hand. Someone comes to a country where English is the primary language, they should learn English. The English speaking citizens should not have to go out of their way learning a foreign language because the non English speaking immigrants speak no English.
b/c i haven't met a single mexican immigrant that did not try or at least did not pick up on certain aspects of the english language are they articulate? no... but that doesn't take away from their effort.
i think some ppl's problem is they dont speak it coherently enough or the way they want them to speak it.

That's a good point and the Federal govt should decide on the matter once and for all. 29 states have English as an official language, so the whole country is the next step.

With 40 million people speaking Spanish in the US there is obviously a huge community in which you can get along just fine knowing only that language. I don't see why you think it should be an obligation for them to learn English.

Its not like those 40 million people are concentrated in one place,; they're scattered throughout the country. You might have two blocks in a given city where only Spanish is spoken, but once they leave their neighborhood, they'll need to rely on English. And besides most of those 40 million (which includes me) also speak English anyway.

Fun fact: The test for US citizenship can be taken in your choice of 26 different languages. Now is it just me, or is that a bit much? A person who only speaks Hmong and doesn't know what the Battle of Gettysburg was has no business being American.

I agree but if the Americans dont learn something new about the World than you get stupid people that think Canadians live in igloos etc...and there are plenty of these people sill left in the US. Thats the problem. Most Americans dont want to think outside of the box.
I studied German in High school before our moronic government decided to make it non compulsory to do a language at GCSE level, unless they have changed back now? if not, they should make a language GCSE compulsory. We had French or German, plus Latin for some, choices at exams when I was at school.
Anyway, not a fan of learning German now and wish I did French at school.
I'm learning French now, love the language and found out a few years ago that I'm French thanks to one side of my family.
Arabic is studied in our household too, not by me though, but I help to test the person sometimes, so some stuff goes into my head. Hard language to study.
I have to wonder that if the people who say "just learn English!" have ever tried learning another language before. It's not something that happens overnight - it takes years to learn a new language. And English is a very difficult language to learn - it's highly irregular and every single 'rule' has a half-dozen exceptions to it.
Anyway, mostly right now I'd like to go back to studying German. Took it all through high school, but it's been a few years so I've forgotten a lot. I'd like to actually formally learn Japanese - I know most of the grammar and stuff, but I can't read much in the way of kanji and know little vocabulary. Beyond that, I dunno...Mandarin, maybe, since it's the most widely spoken language in the world. There are a lot of languages I'd like to learn, really. Being multilingual would be awesome.
