Kind of lame, but eh. Sidious' death was lamer.

Luke managed to destroy some hosts of Abeloth by using the surroundings to his advantage, breaking bones with debris/rubble and burning flesh with hot materials. Abeloth, for all her power, isn't very good at defending her hosts from external threats. She lacks in formal training so this might be the reason. In contrast, Vitiate was very good at defending himself. He prevented T3-M4 from incinerating him with his grasp of defensive aspects of the Force even though he was caught off-guard by such an attempt on him. Heck, some Sith Lords serving him could tank even direct missile hits. I believe that Vitiate was virtually immune to most attacks.
Luke's Oneness had nothing to do with that, for a brief moment his power over-ruled Abeloth's.
He did dominate the HoT, but they broke his control.

HoT killed him. Although, I'm not sure why he can't just resurrect himself considering he knows the proper ability...
Apparently Vitiates flipping the **** out since his death. His Children can hear him raging and screaming in their minds, schizophrenically telling them to boil Manaan and burn Kashyyyk at the same time.
He'll be back, I think he's just really ****ed up.

That kind of defeats the whole "he can overpower anyone's mind at will" kinda argument though, right?
That argument has been dead since 2011. Funny enough, Karpyshyn came out and actually confirmed that Vitiate can't do that shit at whim in an email.. hence why he never actually does.

When he does come back, what's he gonna do? He can possess a weak host, sure.

Vitiate suffered a major setback in this encounter because he was interrupted from his (ultimate) ritual which seemingly backfired on him heavily.
It is not clear how Vitiate was eventually vanquished.
