f#$# no.... you know better then that and i am sure its not even legal..

it should stay in a fund for future unforeseen issues from the mess. probably overseen with a mix of government elected officials as well as a public board of sorts.

Just like the government did with social security? That is basically letting the politicians split it among themselves.
😂

no, more like the red cross 911 thing...

The oil spill is dissipating on its own, therefore the damage may not be as bad as was first estimated.

The oil spill is, on a micro level, dissipating. Is this going to reduce the price tag in any significant way? No, not even close. Especially since the leak itself is still going, and so the damage for now can do nothing but increase.

But that is not my question.

No. Because BP are the biggest failures ever to walk the earth.

You realise BP aren't to blame. This could've been stopped if the rig crew hadn't turned off all early warning systems and alarms just so a couple of crew could sleep a little. They broke every health & safety law under the sun to get 40winks and still despite the evidence I've noticed that BP are still the key focus of all the flack...

Maybe Obama should bite the bullet and tell the American people that he made a mistake? He was too quick to point the finger...

Your questions is, who will get the leftovers of the money in the event that it costs less than 20 billion. This is a useless question, because the price tag for the cleanup is simply guaranteed to exceed that.

BP are definitely to blame. I have heard no source for your allegation, but even if that were true it doesn't change the fact that BP had three blowout protectors that would trigger to stop this, and nobody in charge made sure that they worked. Oil spill comes, and sure enough, none of them work.

But the what if question is interesting. So lets say the BP gave 10,000 billion dollars for clean up and it only cost 5,000 billion... Do you see how the amount of money is immaterial to the question?

It's their money. I kind of expect them to keep paying until the job is done, not hash out a set budget and then stick with it.

Should they keep paying after the job is done?

The company's and its board of director's entire patrimonies should be liquidated and turned into a fund to conserve marine ecossystems and indenizate the victms. Anyone deemed responsible should also get a bullet to the head.

Instead their CEO got 150 million dollars shoved up his ass, so that he could be fired. The ******* is now giving lectures.

And which political party would you rather get the money.

The idea that the money would be spent for conserving marine ecosystems, would just be a cover story, and never really happen.

None.

Public funds like this are created all the time as compensation for environmental damage. Political pressure and surveilance from the public would likelly do just fine in guaranteeing it served its purposes.

Really? I think the 20 billion was extracted from the BP, for use by the Democratic party. I know that the Republican's would do the same if they were in power. A small amount, enough to keep people quiet, will be spent on the environment, but the rest will just disappear.

That only shows us political intitutions incapacity to properly handle these affairs. What should be done remains the same and it's perfectly possible to do it.

Good luck with that.
