Then Master Chief can just mostly use melee weapons. His fists and kicks are light attacks, swinging an energy sword would be medium, gravity hammer would be heavy, and his assault rifle would be long range that will shoot in a short period like Jaxx when he uses his SMG.
If Mortal Kombat wasn't touched by science fiction at all, it would be.

When it can't even eat through clothes?
Him using melee attacks/weapons would make him less MC, and more 'generic armored man'. Still, would be the best approach if they want to put in MC.
Meh, given his fanbase, he'll likely be put in, but I still think it would be ghey.

Gameplay mechanic. Just like how Darkseid's omega beams don't incinerate anyone into nothing when in contact.
Of course it would be the best approach and go ahead and think if him appearing in MK is ghey, I think it would be awesome if he was in it.

I find it rather silly that Bungie didn't allow MC in DoA4 due to storyline restrictions. Non-canon is non-canon. Master Chief wouldn't have really went back in time and isn't the point of having characters like him in fighting games because it's just simply for fun? Link from Legend of Zelda and Spawn from his comic books appeared in Soul Calibur but did that go and screw anything up in their canon series? No, I don't think so. Since Master Chief's fight with the Covenant is over with and has been for three years and is drifting in space, I think now would be the best time for Bungie to let Warner Bros. add John-117 in MK and see him fight characters like Scorpion.

Ever heard of gimping? No doubt they would solve that problem by making the hammer less powerful than it was in the Halo games so Master Chief doesn't become such a broken character to use.

All I know is that he's appeared in the DoA series, his own series, a movie, and an OVA. Besides, he may have had more appearances, but he'd still fit into MK far better than MC ever would.

Admittedly, the MK characters' abilities need to be flushed out a bit more. Hopefully, it will in this game.
I gotta admit, even though it seem like a mismatch (unless it was in the Netherrealm), a fight between Scorpion and Kratos would be cool to see, since they're similar characters.
