We all HOPE there's an afterlife, atheists included (most of us, at least). That's not the exclusive property of theists.

I suppose most people hope, or would hope that there is an awesome afterlife of awesome. Though considering the punishment one would face in certain afterlife I think it would be quite reasonable for people to choose (if they could) not to have an afterlife rather than gamble on this.

"Do you know what Hell is? I'd rather not exist than go back there."

Well, I was raised atheist by atheist parents. About two years ago, my brother and I decided to become agnostic. There's just not enough evidence one way or another to believe one way or another. Anyway, that's what I believe

what evidence do you think would prove God doesn't exist?

Atheists don't believe God exists. I hope you realize, this is not the same thing as believing God doesn't exist.

Semantics.

I don't think I am familiar with this quote, but I understand the sentiment.

Semantics.

I believe god doesn't exist = There is evidence that god is not existent.
I don't believe god exists = I see no reason to believe god exists.

Never seen Dogma?

Semantics.

It isn't semantics (though I admit, I didn't state it very clearly).

I'm very curious what you thought that statement would add to the conversation. Did you think it would be funny? Did you think it would be insightful? Do you think it would point out some truth that would change opinions? Did you understand that it had nothing to do with the issue at hand, and were just trying to troll? Did you think it was a legitimate answer, making you an idiot?

I just don't get it.

I believe god doesn't exist, can = I see no reason to believe god exists. That is why I say it is semantics. Otherwise, you have to have a lack of belief, and I don't believe that is humanly possible.

But I understand what people are trying to say, so enough said.

I just don't get it.

It had everything to do with the issue at hand.

See, a lot of hardcore skeptics (Not just about God, but also ghosts, UFO's, Bigfoot etc) don't accept something unless they lay their own two naked eyes upon it. And I can't always tell if its genuine doubt, or if they're just being stubborn for the sake of it.

I am not sure if what KK said makes an actual difference in English, colloquially surely not. But of course what he is referring to is two vastly different things, like Sym pointed out.

Oh I have actually, it must have totally slipped my mind. It seemed familiar though I just couldn't place it at all.

Huh? People believe in lots of things they can't see with their eyes. What people want is proof, not unsupported claims.

this is easily disprovable

I just invented something that might exist. You don't have an opinion on it. Done.

There's a difference between materialism (nothing outside physical reality) and atheism. And one can be an atheist without being a materialist, but not vice-versa.[/B]
There are forms of pantheism and perhaps even animism that are compatible with materialism.

Why though? What would be the incentive for an Atheist wanting an afterlife? That just doesn't make sense.

I tend to agree with this.

And how many people, who are atheist, don't have an opinion about god? Everyone, on this forum, has some opinion on god; it's only a matter of degree.
