Other than him though I'd say the comic book character that comes closest to matching the literary monster would be Solomon Grundy in certain incarnations. The "smart" version of Grundy who wore a business suit was pretty much an evil version of the monster from the end of the book who had become educated and articulate.

There was a news article a while back about a drug made from a South American flower that once used on a human would put the victim in a zombified state where he/she would be almost fully functional but only semi-conscious and very open to suggestion and commands.
