first names arent classified though, your confusing the use of callsigns with trying to keep first names secret, using callsigns is just universal military standard, and a lot more efficient than using first names, still in the military you dont usually know people by anything other than what you hear them called as, john is always called Chief, because of his rank, not because nobody knows his name is john or that its a tight-lipped secret, few know his name is john however, because he's alwas called chief, or sierra 117, or "look a spartan!"
the books are really all they go by.. and usually during missions they go by blue 1, blue 3, and such.. and when theres interaction between regular troops, those same troops have a hard time telling the spartans apart. and are addressed by their call signs, or simply by "spartan". their first names are classified, and the chiefs first name isnt widely known at all.. only cortana, keys, and halsey (as well as the other spartans) knew it.. so yeah.. first names arent known by any..
