Not really.
There are a few characters that really galvanize us Kratos fans into overdrive (like fellow action stars like Dante), but other than that we have an absolute clear understanding of his tier and don't reach for the impossible.
As a God of War afficianado (still need the novel though), Kratos vs Wonder Woman would be terrible, unless its the DCAU version of Wonder Woman, then Kratos could (and in all likelihood would) win.

thats why there is the gear stipulation.....it sort of levels the playing field

It's always maddening to me that they always seemed to pair these two up as 'rivals' in the Marvel vs Capcom games. They have basically nothing in common whatsoever--other than Wolverine having a lot of training in Japan.
Ryu vs Cyclops is better, but even then, despite them having ranged capabilities in common, Cyclops has none of Ryu's high meta physical stats.
