thats blather though

I get what the rhetoric is supposed to mean, but the fact is, there is, regardless of how horizontally structured, difused, distributed, or loosly affiliated, a group of people, who self identify with the term, that may have stumbled upon a form of citizen action that would be an effective tool of protest in the modern world. Real protesting doesn't work anymore, maybe taking down internet communication infrastructure would.

that they are too "in the moment" to maybe do something that interesting for history is, well, their ontological choics.

You still miss the point anonymous isn't a 'they', you download the software I had sent to me today and did not install and you to could be anonymous. If you decide to attack Pedos next week and release a list like some anonymous who was part of 'anonymous' did and other anonymous people like me... ring him up we are anonymous...
Anonymous is these guys today it could be you tomorrow.

yes, I understand that, but that is still a person choosing to do something as "anonymous"

my point is that this could be used as a way to actually have an impact on "the system", if this will to do such actions could be organized into a more serious attempt to disrupt corporations or governments.

Small groups out there do this already.. It's not numbers of people you need really just servers and or giant botnets.

cool...

its interesting there was such a response to the freedom of information issue too. If sheer numbers are what is necessary, maybe issues like this could add to that

It is interesting basically DDoS aims to create a dat 'bottleneck', it's pretty crude really. I'm no hacker; but, I do know Assange is a frigging hacking god and he has probably the best hacker in the world on his side - Jacob Appelbaum..... Wait till he gets involved..... 🙂

but like, what can the police or, i don't know, army(?), do to stop them? like, how much risk would there be to an identifiable individual like Appelbaum if he did get involved? could he actually do something serious to the US government?

He is the most anonymous man on the net......after maybe Dingledine...

Appelbaum is the greatest hacker alive.

I'm wondering if there's precedent to the current war going on between supporters of Wikileaks and opponents of it.

Not the cyber war aspect so much as the scale, with all the companies that have been involved.

the state of Estonia was shut down by Russian nationalists over an argument about taking down a statue

Yes it is, Dingledine is probably the only guy in his class as coders go. Believe it or not.... On May 2, 2006 someone tried firing a mini botnet at this site... allegedly, the person concerned was very inexperienced at it and only got about 1200 Zombies to attack.

YouTube video

EDIT: also, seriously, WTF Canada

^ it's incredible how polite and rational their analysts are. think I've become to used to US media and brazilian media modeled after it.

I think it's the best news station on the planet

The little Robert Gates thing at around 6:00 is just humiliating to hear as an American. Yeah we might be lying, unreliable, dicks, that can't keep our own people in line, but **** you we've got money. It's like he thinks the US government can or should set aside its ideals just because it has power. Is not the whole point of being a "good guy" with tremendous power that you don't have to compromise your principles so much?

god, you are going to love the remarks about "executive discression" at the end then 🙂

the state could charge the media with espionage, its just a nice guy
