Travel speed can be used in a fight depending on how quickly they can accelerate to their top speed (and the general circumstances surrounding their top speed attainment permitting it).
Hell, the the shortest distance between two points is always a straight line, so a FTL fighter could theoretically just shoot STRAIGHT towards an a opponent at their top speed and if the opponent does not have FTL reactions, then he can't do a damn thing about it.
We know Steve Rogers has dodged a punch from Thanos, not just any random Thanos either, but Thanos at his absolute best with the IG. Is it simply a low showing for Thanos and/or a situation of SMvFL for Cap? Well, we also know that Thanos can and has tagged Surfer, who at top speed isn't simply faster than light, he's like millions of times faster than light. Not an exaggeration in the least. But to my knowledge Thanos has never reacted to a Surfer charging him at such speeds, usually Surfer is already within a couple of arm's lengths of Thanos when the latter has been able to punch the shit out of him.
As for the proposed reaction speed that Surfer would need to fly at FTL? During interstellar travel how often is he even worried about reacting to things? Isn't he really simply just travelling from point A to point B during these things? What would he have to worry about dodging things for? It's not like running into an asteroid belt is going to harm him. And if there are obstacles like planets in the way, he would already know about them before he ever began his trip.
