I watched the first 20 mins of this film tonight. An awesome intro.I also watched a later scene that is so far outside what I expected from a prequel that I am now absolutely busting to see the whole film.
IIRC, it's still not officially a "prequel".
I still need to check out the Wayland and David viral vids.

Spoiler:
It's safe to say the film takes place before Aliens which in turn could've only been so long after Alien. But when you factor in cryosleep things get hazy. Actually considering how long Ripley slept and realised how old her daughter was the years get interestingly blurred. But I reckon this film takes place before Alien.
If I'm wrong shoot me down. 😄
When I heard Ridley Scott dumped ALIEN prequel I was gutted and angry but as news came out about the Space Jockey I came interested again. Well today I went and saw Prometheus 2D not 3D which I have no time for, any how what can I say without giving away too much.
Not a great deal to be honest, the Space Jockey (ALIEN) are named Engineers (Prometheus) and no I can not say any more than that as there are reasons. The style of this film is far from the grudge and worn out look of (ALIEN) slick and hi-tec Set in 2093,before (ALIEN) set in 2122.
The film as a whole was good but it raised many questions and no answers which was some what frustrating but that a side you will have to judge this one yourself's, worth seeing...Yes.
Spoiler:
Weyland-Yutani Corporation & David is no Ash or Bishop.
Spoiler:
The movie does take place before Alien. The Nostromo and Sulaco look worn down/antiquated and stripped down and warlike respectively, by comparison due to the functionality of the vessels.. Prometheus is top of the line really expensive and cutting edge as its the companies flagship exploration vessel, and the company's owner has a massive ego and tonnes of cash. The only thing that belied some "Hmmmm thats a bit more futuristic looking than what we've seen", is that when handguns are fired at one point, the rounds have smokey luminscent blue trails not unlike in "Eraser".
Also Avoid Wikipedia and all spoiler sources regarding plot detail.
Cause Wiki has the skeleton of the entire plot down pretty accurately, only makes it seem less than it is, by just reading it. You have to see this yourself. Don't let some putz on the net take that away from you.
But bare in mind: All new story, all new characters, lighter visual look, darker tone in plot/implication. I give it a good 8 and half out of ten. (And it may have been 9, were it not for the **** of a projectionist who seemed to have the 3D slightly out at the screening I attended.)
Below is a "spoiler" that will actually enhance your enjoyment of the movie, should you look. It certainly would cut down confusion particulary toward the end.

Spoiler:
Its NOT LV-426. Its all on LV-223 or 233. Same system: Different planet.

Hmm... this sounds like it's gonna be confusing. Is it?

Only if youre under misapprehension that
Spoiler:
its the same planet as in Alien and Aliens. but in order to do that you'd have to not know your LV 426s from your LV 233s. And if you miss the distinction made only by those numbers, you might be confusing yourself thinking "Oh that's the Nostromo Planet!!! How come its different in this kinda way...and how come that such and such a thing is not there in Ripley's time etc etc

Well, you just managed to confuse me further, Sadako... lol. Oh well, I'll just have to see it. One more week to wait. I got a picture of my girlfriend and myself underneath the huge poster in town...I think I'm gonna go a little out of my way to a 3D IMAX showing next weekend. : )
Cool beans. It'll make sense to ya when you see it, but basically what I mean is, youre better off forgetting that its an Alien related movie, and going into it just to see some cool scifi..
That sounds like a winner. 'Tis a bit of a visual spectacle...
