I liked Roger Ebert's blurb on RT this morning...
Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" is a magnificent science-fiction film, all the more intriguing because it raises questions about the origin of human life and doesn't have the answers.Roger Ebert

This one too...
"Prometheus" damn near lives up to the unsustainable hype, at least at the level of cinematography, production design, special effects and pure wow factor.Andrew O'Hehir

Wise words. It surprises people because its hyped in the wrong direction. The marketing may be responsible, or maybe the expectations of the audience is a little off based off of the gore based later stuff and AVP movies tone..I genuinely am beginning to think that most of those who are hating on it would have hated Blade Runner if seen for the 1st time today.
I guess I'll be glad I haven't seen the trailers. 😄
And yeah, god, I hope it's as far from the AVP franchise as possible. That shit's a mockery of the true origins..
Yet, oddly enough, I'm not a huge fan of Blade Runner. Not sure why... I guess I don't really understand it too well. It's well done, though.
