Amazing how conflicting the reports are on the Nuclear reactor situation.

You get the "doom and gloom" reports comparing things to Chernobyl, then you have some professor or experts comming on saying it you can´t compare it to chernobly and its not that big a problem.

A classic case of the media making a mountain out of a mole hill for attention, or are the "experts" dubbing it down a bit for some reason?

Seems more like a case of people trying to predict how an extremely complicated situation will turn out, they're doing exactly as well as you would expect. There's also a huge about of misinformation and confusion on both sides.

Like for example Chernobyl was a level 7 nuclear disaster and this could also end up as a level 7 disaster, but that won't make it has bad as Chernobyl since the scale stops at 7. For example the core of Chernobyl basically exploded and sent a column of radioactive material into the air. That physically can't happen with Fukushima.

though, there are people predicting that a low level cloud of radiation like the one Fukushima might release could be more devastating, because it has the possibility of getting into the ground, or settling on a major urban center.

I get what you are saying, but I do agree with Bic. "sides" are starting to emerge to this disaster

DO NOT FEED THE TROLL

"This is going to make me sound like a really bad person," she began. "But I was kind of excited that all these people were angry because I am a troll and I enjoy getting a reaction out of people."

Alright, I take back what I said; it would be hilarious if a reaction see got from someone was them ripping off her face ala angry-chimp-style.

+1

I still want to smash her face in.

She does have a very annoying demeanour.

Sorry, was just taking a quick flick through and there was some query about how the MMS scale used for significant earthquakes these days differs from the Richter scale.

By numbers it does not; it was specifically designed to use the same numbers. A 9 on the MMS is a 9 on Richter. The difference was simply in how it is measured; the Richter method was inaccurate for large quakes.

There's no question of this having been a 9.9 on the 'old' scale. I'm not a mathematician but I believe on a logarithmic scale a 9.9 would be strong enough to affect the entire planet- it would have to be about ten times as powerful as the one here, I understand, to get to 9.9.

The difference between the originally reported 8.9 and the now accepted 9 is already vast; it is not a small adjustment.

Does this mean that this one is bigger than the Chile one for example, in 1960 which was measured 9.5 on the old scale and touted as the biggest earthquake ever measured?

No, that one is still the "biggest" earthquake ever recorded.

Just saw this on youtube from Florida, anyone from there here?? If so did any of you hear this??

Three things:

(1) Yes I'm from Florida, but I've not heard of any of this, maybe its a different part of Florida.
(2) They have the same problem as my family with their fire alarms constantly beeping warnings.
(3) I think that video shows the first Martian Tripod activating.

read a few news articles and watched the video. Sounds like an aeroplane stuck in a time loop.

Very weird indeed! and petty scary to experience live I´m sure.

Maybe it´s ancient humans meditating like in the video below apparently recorded in a Tibetan "Spirit cave". Sounds very similar!!

Despite protests from the South Korea government, Russian scientists, and Japanese fishermen, Japan authorized the release of the 11,500 tonnes (12,700 tons) of less radioactive water into the ocean to make room to store more highly contaminated water.[153][156]
Iodine-131 levels reached 7.5 million times the legal limit in a seawater sample taken near the facility.[153]

"Iodine-131 levels reached 7.5 million times the legal limit in a seawater sample taken near the facility.[153]"

They forgot to mention that iodine-131 has half-life of 8 days. Within 3 weeks, its potency can become quite tame, depending on the how much we are talking about. It beta-decays an electron and antineutrino which is considered to be nasty to organisms...which I think is what the mess is about? I thought Japan had protections in place to keep wild-life out of the area?

I'm more concerned about the long-term radioactive matter. Any word on that?

Japan's argument was more in the vein of "the ocean is ****ing huge man".

What's this about Japan?

They had another 7.1 earthquake (size might get down/updgraded) last night, a couple of other nuclear power plants lost electricity but the emergency generators came online.

Not a clever place to build these things.
