It would be a big FU to him and his followers. And here's what's worse: I just read on ABCNews that he was given a proper Muslim burial at sea. Complete with Muslim prayers recited, he was wrapped in a white cloth as per Muslim customs, and the whole she-bang. Now that's ridiculous. During the Crusades, the Christian Knights would dishonor dead Muslim leaders by wrapping their bodies in pig skins and burying them facedown to assure entry into Hell and as an added insult to their families/followers. They should have done that to him...it wouldn't be too mean based on his wrap sheet and all the blood on his hands.

Well, that is a bit silly, if true. I figured it was just wrapping the body, weighing it down and sinking it.
Actions like that would serve no purpose except as a further rallying cause for young would-be terrorist recruits.

You think the bit of diplomacy in following Islamic burial traditions is a bigger rallying cause for would be terrorists, than if they had just ignored it all together and simply cast his body over board or cremated him? Don't really gain much by insulting a group of unhinged terrorist further by being insensitive to their religious believes after killing their leader... why poke the bear?

yes, but if we had disrespected the body, even moderates in the greater middle east, north africa and south asia would be quite upset.
I agree, maybe not prayer and all the ceremonies (though, if it cost nothing, who cares), but there is no reason to try and turn this into another Quran burning where people can become outraged over American insensitivities.
