No, not really. When Al Qaida beheads Americans and then post it on the internet, it seems more befitting of their typical behavior. I woudn't expect them to give an American POW a proper burial with a grave-marker. That's the whole point: in a war, competing sides have historically never been all that respectful of the enemy dead. That's why Xerxes crucified Leonidas' body uspide down. And frankly, a burial at sea for bin Laden was too respectful. They should have planted that SOB's head on a wooden stake.By the way, it wasn't "3,000 Americans". It was less than 3,000 and citizens from over 90 different countries were killed. Including yours.
👆 Pretty much!!

Come on, I doubt anyone on board the ship had the Captain Kirk lower-lip tremble as the body was cast off.
What would parading the corpse accomplish?

Yes some Arab, I do not see how killing that man solves problems.
And Inimalist:
The site of his body would become a beacon for people who want to do harm to American interests... also, why would the American tax payer be asked to foot the bill for the funeral of Bin Laden?
You know, there is an old saying that goes something like this: "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" I agree. But if you somehow can manage to get your supposed "enemy" to put all HIS eggs in one basket then well, is'int that exactly what you should do?
I mean you'd have them all there, and you'd know where "there" was even. So yeah I think it's damn stupid of the Americans to do what they did, if the intent is to catch and even kill terrorists and Al Qaeda followers. The whole time the problem according to them has been, "we dont know where they are, or who they are, or where they meet, and baaaa baaa baaaa."
he defended himself. I'm sure if the Americans could have taken him alive, they would have, it would have been a even larger victory. The imagine of a broken and defeated Bin Laden in a prison cell is the best meme that America could ever produce to combat Al Qaeda
(Reuters) – The U.S. special forces team that hunted down Osama bin Laden was under orders to kill the al Qaeda mastermind, not capture him, a U.S. national security official told Reuters. “This was a kill operation,” the official said, making clear there was no desire to try to capture bin Laden alive in Pakistan.
Mmmhmmm.
And what I meant with them knowing where he was and all, and surrounding the building. Is that, they could have just waited him out, until he had no food, no nothing left and they where to weak to even resist. Thats one way, said simply, you see they had his house surrounded, which means no way for him to escape, which means if they wanted, like really wanted, they could have taken him alive eventually and THEN brought him in front of the International Court.
And what I mean with "why now?" was because it seems like they made this thing happened just now, when America needs this sorta thing the most, or rather Obama needs it the most.

Regardless, great that he's dead.
Also, to the birthers: if the elite could fake Osama's death from the beginning, why didn't Bush do it years ago when it would have been the absolute best strategic move to do? I'm sure the answer is, "Obviously, to take the attention off of the birth certificate and to get more support from the sheeple for their 'Puppet King.'" Ugh. That doesn't actually answer the question I just asked.
what do you mean, "to the birthers?" what does that have to do with this?
Four reasons to maybe have kept the body:
1) Showing the world that it is Bin Laden.
2) Communicating to the world that if you get up to the sort of shit that that guy was meant to have done, the this will be the end result.
3) It might bring some peace to those angered at loss of loved ones due to either being attacked by him, or by having to go fight to go get him.
4) They could give the body to Jeff Dunham.

so, let me get this straight
to you, a better military operation would have been a siege, against a single compound, within the territory of a friendly nation, to get a single person who is almost certainly not going to allow themselves to be taken alive?
this is what you think the Americans should have done? This would be the way the nr1 power in the world wages war?
lulz

1 they can accomplish with a simple DNA test, not to mention the political capital that the US has risked now claiming to have killed him, 2/3 are accomplished anyways...

Hitler was Austrian, thank you.
I heard that his sister died of cancer and her DNA would be available....may have been in this very thread.
Also: If he had been dead for years, they could still pull DNA and try to say it was from a fresh kill.
Not everyone can decode DNA.
But everyone would be able to see his body, qualified people could examine it, retesting could be done, if neccessary etc, if he was kept on ice.

Making a bunch of "America **** yeah!" Americans a little happier isn't worth pissing off people not pissed off at the US currently.
Also, it's disgusting and shows a complete lack of humanity. I'd hope the US would be above the tactics of Al Qaida.

Did you see "No country for old men" remember how pissed a lot of folks were when
Spoiler:?
the main protagonist is killed off screen
A lot of people could feel that way x4000...and not because OBL was any kind of hero, but because we need our scumbags to pay.

maybe I should clarify. I think he is dead because America has come out and said they have killed them. I can't think of any time in history they have done this when it wasn't true, though the liveblog seems to confirm there was an operation deep within pakistan
could they have killed him years ago and this is all an elaborate set up? sure, i think it highly unlikely, but sure. Like, there is no way he was dead during the congressional election, or else democrats would have used it.

the main hypocrisy here is that not everyone can examine a body either, even if we just go by pragmatics, a couple thousand people looking over a body and there will be nothing left. So the fact that not everyone can code DNA is moot, as in all circumstances, the public will have to trust (or not) some people who are "experts"
the other issue is that this seems to insinuate that the federal government should maintain anything that might possibly be a piece of evidence in the future, simply because some crackpot might think it is fake. There is no good reason the government should foot the bill to keep OBL on ice simply to pander to people who will never believe them anyways.

not really concerned with hurt feelings of people who need to stare at a corpse
the consequences of having Bin Ladens corpse all over western media, and the internet memes that would spread from it, would be devastating. not giving him a muslim burial is one thing, treating his corpse in a way specifically prohibited by Muslim law is another.
Not to mention what Rob was saying. It makes us look terrible
1) Fair dos.
2) Right, and we should be able to have a big crosssection of trusted medical personel, form all walks to be able to return their independant results... (Which would all be right, if correct, yes?)
No one has to stare, just be able to see for themselves.
Nobody extended this courtesy to this guy:
YouTube video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8YiIBER9zw
Remember him?
The people HATED the guy and wanted proof that he and his wife were dead.
Sure...they re-examninded the bodies a few years ago to confirm with DNA, but there was little doubt int he minds of the mainstream, that they got the job done.
Iraq and Afghanistan arguably made us all look like that to most of the world already.
Also....how much did he care for his fellow muslims' burials' when he killed them in 9/11? Let alone the christians?
I'd have favoured no mutilation, just "retaining in custody".
I'm not surprised it's been announced.
Personally, I think he's been dead for a long time - it takes a lot of doing to survive in those Afghani cavey mountains, and he did have we-don't-know-how-many doubles.
But I think it's unlikely the public will see the body. He was bombed - exploded... if they're having to resort to using his sister's brain to compare DNA, doesn't that say something about the state of his body?
And I don't think he's a martyr now... Americans have basically forgotten all about him and most of Afghanistan was not that fanatic. I think they've wanted his confirmed death for ages.
And he has no need [in the US] to be alive anymore, since Obama doesn't truck with the "War of Terror" monster that Bush started.
