DCU gets remade - all books are #1s, Geoff Johns and Jim Lee on Justice League, more

I'm sure Morrison will do fine. Overall, I'm excited. We have a much more diverse line of books, Wildstorm have been folded into the mix for more interaction, and most of the designs are pretty good. I hope we get confirmation on more books, because I would love a Shade book by Robinson.

Hmm, going by that quote which was talking about Supes being the first hero, it looks like the JSA won't be the first hero's they always have been in the new DCU.

Or Supes will have been on the original JSA

That sucks. 😬

I love the golden age heroes of the DCU such as the JSA, and retconning them out of existence or trying to put them in an alternate Earth-2 like universe just so Superman can be "the first superhero" is ridiculous.

I have no qualms about Morrison writing an early less powerful Superman, but I never liked the idea of Superman being the first superhero in the DCU as it pertained to the modern age of comics.

It is really is starting to feel to me like the execution of this relaunch is counter productive to the goals DC is trying to accomplish with it. They want to update the characters so they are "fresh" and "modern"... and yet a lot of the redesigns look like they were ripped from the pages of early 90s Image "extreme" comics (which I guess is to be expect from Jim Lee). They want to attract new readers who were confused by the decades of continuity of the major characters... but they are only rebooting the lesser characters like Hawkman, while they seem to be keeping large sections of the vast and extremely convoluted histories of the top characters like Batman and Superman. That doesn't make Batman and Superman more accessible, if anything it makes them less accessible because a comic fan or wiki page can't tell a new reader just what is important to know anymore. The characters still have decades of continuity... but the readers don't know which parts DC is cheery picking and choosing to acknowledge. I'm still cautiously optimistic but it really is starting to feel like this has just been extremely mishandled, and some of the creative teams they have on the marque characters are just baffling.

Pretty much.

It feels like DC is keeping Green Lantern and related books untouched by the DCnU sweeping changes, which makes sense as Green Lantern has been arguably their most successful property for the past several years. Batman seems to have some changes, but looks to be retaining elements of Batman Inc as well as Damian Wayne, etc.

I want DC to succeed as I love a lot of their characters and properties, but a lot of these ideas are really "meh" for me.

Superman is being changed... If anything, his continuity seems to have changed as much as anyone's...

Superman being the first hero (which he was in terms of comic books) doesn't mean that they are completely rebootng JSA. Wait and see guys, don't jump to any conclusions.

As for Superman, I think they are changing him because of the whole legal issues.

Martian Mind might like this interview. Seems MM is a major part of Stormwatch.

Well this is June 11th, suppose to drop bombs here in a few. Link from Newsrama in a few minutes.

That was my thinking too. The costume revamp being the most obvious early indicator that we have...

Just Johns and Lee fellating each other right now.

Lame. Not much said. Looks like they are going to be tweeking Superman's origins to step around this law suit. What do you guys thinking of making him a Kheran now that Majestic is part of the DC U?

Well, that wasn't much... Notes:

RE JLA:

Johns on membership: "Our first arc is the origin of the team. It takes place in the past, and the next arc will take place in the present."

--

Johns said that when Green Lantern first meets Batman, he's going to ask "what are your powers?" The initial relationship between these characters will be explored.

ha...

"ooh bat powers... oh."

--

RE: NEGATIVE FEEDBACK:

"If you don't execute it correctly, then all bets are off," Johns said. "No one sets out to make people upset."

Johns said that if things are done with care, they should be successful, using Hal Jordan's return as Green Lantern as an example.

Lee said that they wouldn't tackle a challenge this big if they didn't have confidence that they could do it correctly.

--

Grant Morrison via video:

"It's a big honor and responsibility to relaunch Action Comics #1," Morrison says via video.

Morrison says they want to "recreate" Superman for the 21st century, and "do something that's a little bit new."

Morrison says they will "change some of the basics" and reintroduce familiar characters in some unfamiliar ways.

Morrison says they're looking for an "unexpected" take on Superman.

"A different side of the character than we've ever seen before," Morrison says of his Action Comics #1.

Morrison says him and Rags Morales are trying to create a "new language" for comics storytelling — things that only comics (not even movies) can do.

Morrison calls the DC revamp a "ridiculous voyage into the unknown."

Yeah... he'd better not **** it up.

--

"Grant Morrison, to me, is the best comic book writer," Johns said.

--

Of the GL movie, Johns said he'd love for a generation of kids to discover Green Lantern like he did with Star Wars.

lol.

So yeah, sweet f*ck all really.

In short, no.

I really didn't get any new information from the live coverage at all...

Well that was a disapointment...

Not a fan. At all.

Seriously, they had the chance to alleviate a lot of concern/criticism with this, and they basically just hyped each other and Grant Morrison up while telling us stuff we already knew wrapped in slightly different (and live!) verbal wrapping.

Yep.

That was kinda disappointing, for what they build this as. 😬

DC is poised to lose the rights to everything Krypton, the Superman origin and all the Daily Planet stuff in this lawsuit. Making Superman "the last son of Krypton," isn't really a good idea if they will have to reboot him again in 2013. A Kheran is close enough to a Krypton and it is already an established mythos.

it's already been hinted that krypton will still be around post reboot.

and even if it's not, making him like majestic would be a bad idea imo.

I don't remember reading anything about Krypton in any of the press releases so far but you could be right. Still they should make Zealot an Amazonian and Majestic a Krpytonian (or Superman a Kheran), the merger is going to leave us with several redundant races / factions that don't need to exist in one continuity.

the supergirl one talked about a new take on the "teenager from krypton". that could be a typo, or it could be intentional.

if they can't, i'm very much expecting them to just be vague about it all...

i'm sure they'll come up with something, even if it sucks.
