Are there any new 52 books worth reading this week? I haven't yet read any.

Green Lantern & The Shade.

Ah completely forgot about The Shade. I'll read that for sure. 👆

Batgirl was decent too.

The Shade wasn't quite what I expected it to be. I'll continue following the series simply for my like of the character--but the first issue didn't really leave me wanting more, tbh.

I was left a bit disappointed too.

Geoff Johns re: JL:

The duo then showed some un-inked penciled pages, including the first look at a penciled Darkseid. "Darkseid is going to be very different, we're not going to get into the fourth world too much," said Johns. With a laugh he added, "He doesn't have thigh-high boots or a skirt either."

As in, Morrison told him not to **** it up.

Resurrection Man and Franky were the highlights for me.

Grifter from the Edge line.

Not sure how to take this part of the statement. If you're trying to convey the 'godliness' of the New Gods to the masses, elaborating on the 4th World is an absolute must, imo.

...But that might be too complicated of a task for good ol' Johns, so maybe it's better in the long run. ermmnone

As much as I hate saying it, I'll probably stop reading Frankenstein all together. In my opinion it still comes off as a [poorly done] ripoff of Hellboy. /shrug

As for Resurrection Man: it maintained it's mediocrity as well (imo.) It really brings nothing 'new' to the 'new' 52. The general plot is almost exactly like that of the previous series... Except not as original.

i never read the og seri2es, so im a casual fan of the character and thus enjoying the series.

did it ever say that franky was just going to hunt down monsters? becasue i thought SHADE dealt with all types of threats.

plus im a fan on how they are using palmer. hes come up with some uber tech so far.

No skirt means no Darkseid, evil gods wear skirts.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with enjoying the aforementioned series'--they just aren't for me.

Morrison drove Johns out to some pond in the middle of nowhere, Maine and told him that sometimes things got lost on the bottom of the pond and were never found again...and it would be a shame if someone were to ruin the New Gods.

i think he simply means that we won't see new genesis or anything like that, and he's going to leave them, at least to the characters in the book, shrouded in mystery. Not saying it's a good idea, though.

Pretty much.

Couple of things:

Curse Of Shazam details:

As previously stated SHAZAM will not be getting his own title, but will be getting a back up story in Justice League. The story be entitled The Curse Of Shazam, and will placed behind the Justice Leagues main story. The Curse of Shazam will begin in Justice League #5, which will be out in January. Artist Gary Frank spoke of his on his enthusiasm for the project and the character saying, The whole thing is being done from the point of view of bringing in new fans as well as trying to excite the existing ones. Anyone will be able to pick this up even if they have never heard of Shazam, Captain Marvel or Billy Batson. It's a wonderful character. As pure a story of superhero wish-fulfillment as exists."

Expect to see Captain Marvel is a different costume as well, but don't expect it to be like any of the other superhero redesigns that we have seen so far. "Both Geoff and I were keen that our costume should look different to the rest of the Justice League's costumes since it comes from a different place," said Frank. No final decision has been made on the costume yet, but they want the suit to feel classic with Frank saying, "We're still ironing it out but, whereas the other costumes feel very modern and cool, ours needs to feel timeless and, hopefully, cool. We are dealing with magic rather than tailoring, so this has to be in there somehow."

Frank also touched briefly on how he came to love the character of Captain Marvel, siting Mark Waid and Alex Ross's Kingdom Come as his inspiration. "I absolutely love Mark's take on the character, even though we really only see the true Billy Batson for a second or two before he dies. But on every page you can feel him and his history. It's all there in the way he is perceived. I love the fact that there is an unease among the other heroes to be in the presence of that much power." Frank also anticipates fan backlash from some of the changes that he and Johns are making to the character, saying he is aware of conservative fans who are skeptical about radical new approaches, but assures people they are not trying to destroy the characters but rather keep them fresh so that they can stick around for further generations.

👆

If I was a betting man, I'd imagine the changes that might put off more conservative Shazam/CM fans would be taking the character in a darker direction, hence the title of the back up. The idea of the Power of Shazam being a curse was toyed with by Johns during the Black Adam & Isis JSA arc years ago, so I can see him going back to that. Perhaps Adam is the reason why it's seen as a "curse" as he corrupted the power (or it corrupted him depending on how you view him) and Billy being the new champion of the Wizard is an attempt to set things right. I'm open to a new direction so long as the core of what makes Cap Cap and Billy Billy remain the same, which, considering the remarks made in the above, sound like it will.

I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt too... Hoping it's worth it.

Same here.

I'd imagine that, considering Johns history of working with the characters, new direction or no, it will at least be an enjoyable addition to read at the end of Justice League proper. My only real concern is whether or not he'll get too fixated on Adam again and focus more on him than Cap himself.

Hopefully not. Johns has been solid post reboot, so I'm hoping he keeps it up.
