I'm mostly talking about regions as opposed to nations anyway, in an arbitrary manner, so if you think there is warrant for it, be my guest. (I.E. Ukrainians, Russians = Eastern Europeans) Japan and China though, definitely not. Separated by an ocean.

Saying you're "American", "Russian", or "Italian" in the context you're talking about is referring to citizenship status (As opposed to, say, race. But of course, American isn't a race, so...)
