Johns may have retconned how the yellow ring worked, but that doesn't completely erase what came before..
The disparity between general power levels and how the rings operate are so different between Pre and Post GL: Rebirth/Johns' Era. And I used to argue for keeping PC Hal feats as canon as his history is still mostly intact, but even so, the reality of the situation is that the power rings have been significantly changed in portrayal.
Even around Emerald Twilight you can see the differences.
Still, I do think the power rings, on some level, require willpower in the vein of concentration and manifesting thoughts into reality. They are thought based weapons powered by emotions.

No, it doesn't. Retcons only rewrite what they target, not everything, and there's nothing in Johns run that suggests the colors don't use willpower in some fashion, as they still have the full range of emotion, only with more emphasis on their color.. (Or as PR puts it, they concentrate. And all concentrating/focusing is, is applying willpower, imo..)
For another example, in the v3 run of Green Lantern, Guy used his anger to augment his will. Johns retcon on the colors doesn't make this impossible, by any stretch... And imo, it would make more sense for red colors to use rage to focus will, or violet colors to use love to to augment their power, as emotions are known to improve focus as much as they can impede it.. Emotions being used as to aggregate their focus, basically.
The GL's and the colored Lanterns aren't the Guardians. They still operate off their full emotional spectrum...

Will power is what allows Atrocitus to remain sentient and conscious of his actions unlike the rest of the Red Lantern core who are generally mindless rage machines.
