I really am not sure how exactly it works, but I think they accept the 12 month calendar, as I believe pre-Islamic Arabs had an extra month (not in the matter that it added another month to an existing year, but more like a single month of our time being two months every 4 years only. Islamic lunar calendar is of 354 days now and started with the month of “Muharram” - the pre-Islamic particular month that prohibited wars and revenge among clans. Muhammad forbade adding of this month to the calendar, thus, the Islamic calendar now is one year ahead for every 33 Christian years since the year 622.
I think the beginning and ending of each month is a bit different now because of the lunar watch (according to Mecca only), but the current Islamic calendar incorporated the Byzantine and Persian versions of counting time.

That a religion was founded by a person who did horrible things tells you nothing about that religion, it's just a thing to harp on when you want to annoy people. Thomas Jefferson is one of the most celebrated of the US Founding Fathers, he was also a slave owning rapist. That fact is meaningless if you want to learn about the modern United States.

There needs to be a perspective in Islam.
Muslims believe that Muhammad was, not only a mercy for mankind, but also the ultimate example one should follow. All Muslims are to emulate Muhammed. This is the essence of Islamic tradition and this is where Sunnah comes in.
Qur'an says, that he who disobeys Muhammad, disobeys Allah. Muhammad is considered a perfect human being and as such, him sleeping with a 9 year old is actually quite important.
Although, that's really not the worst thing he did.

We have debates about interpretation and literalism that almost perfectly parallel sectarian divisions in a religion.

The problem you are talking about is not about founders at all. The problem is with some people not willing to listen. You could get rid of all the founders, and the problem will still exist.
It is ok to up hold in reverence the founders, but people being stupid is another matter.
