I do not know Star Trek very well. But I saw all the references and I was shocked how much there were. Just about every scene. It's really quite amazing.

The only thing I found annoying was despite all the references, they just couldn't give Khan his accent or personality. It just didn't seem like Khan at all.

What's the point in references when you can't even make the main villain seem anything like the original.

But apart from that I didn't mind the references and really enjoyed the movie. So I am interested to see what Abrams brings to Star Wars.

Khan himself felt like one big reference. He could have easily been an effective villain and been a different character. Cumberbatch did a good job making him feel threatening and menacing, it wasn't the weight of his character's name. Naming him after the most famous Trek villain just felt like pandering and an attempt to cash in on the original's notoriety to make up for the lackluster story. Take the "Khan" element away, and they probably thought ST:ID would have felt emptier, when really they should have taken the opportunity to develop a more unique and original character.

Given that the sequels won't be remakes I'm not so worried about that for Star Wars, but it's the reason I hate hearing things like "more Sith" and "ghost Palpatine". Rehashing and gravedigging the original material too often hurts.

Here's another idea that I thought, right after the reveal, that would have made the movie better:

Make Benedick Cabbagepatch's character an underling of Khan's. Khan had serveral associates. He could have been a second in command type character. Then at the end, we get the big reveal that he has activated/awakened Khan.

Then cut out that crap where Spock screams "Khan." While it was awesome and funny, it didn't feel right.

Well, Disney is not MAKING it. Lucasfilm is (which is owned bij Disney), helmed by Kathleen Kennedy. I bet she has something to say about it. And she may be the life saver here after working with Spielberg so many years on a great number of successful movies. Sure, they weren't all great, but I bet she knows her stuff.

You give me hope...

I was exclusively told that during that time, it seems that George had two working titles for Star Wars: Episode VII that were competing in his mind: Return of the Sith and Rise of the Jedi! These working titles were turned over to the Disney Company through the sale, BUT, there is no guarantee whatsoever that Disney will use these titles for the movie.

if this is true, then the hell with "what's the title".

to actually have the sith return, and as an added joke, one episode after the sith were killed so that "the one" can fulfill the great story arc prophesy...

whatever the case, if this is true, the sith are like freddy krueger and can never die so the entire prequel trilogy is rendered finally pointless and stupid with all its prophesy bullshit.

*groan* i can see it now, just over the horizon. this is george lucas' revenge. "oh you didnt like my crappy prequels? well just for that im going to have your favorite OT heros whore & humiliate themselves in even crappier sequels! [evil laugh] "

Bleh. I'd still watch them and probably enjoy them. But I was wanting something a bit more than just a rehash of the Star Wars story.

I would enjoy them as well. People get too bent out of shape over this stuff.

Do you want a new story (assuming they do a decent job, of course) or do you prefer the Sith coming to power, again?

Edit - Please be as verbose/descriptive as possible. I promise not to argue. I just haven't had this discussion, in depth, with any Star Wars fans and I am wanting to mature/change my opinions.
