Pregnant woman dies in Ireland after being denied an abortion

Savita Halappanavar, 31, was 17 weeks pregnant when she developed back pain and tests revealed that she would lose her baby.

But despite her repeated pleas over three days, doctors refused to perform a termination as they could still hear the foetus’s heartbeat, reportedly telling her: "This is a Catholic country."

Mrs Halappanavar’s condition rapidly deteriorated and she died after developing septicaemia four days after the death of her baby.
The case has prompted renewed calls for the Irish government to legislate for abortion, with pro-choice campaigners branding her death “an outrage”. -end snip

Catholics

What the holy ****.

They're supposed to, and have, provided terminations when they've been needed.

It's just ******* doctors living in the past that can't get over themselves.

This is the same place where, if a woman goes to a clinic to get the morning after pill, some doctors will actually try to convince them not to do it.

They give Catholics a bad name.

Indeed.

disgusting.

and these bible thumpers wonder why atheism is spreading so rapidly.

I'm against abortion but if the fetus inside is going to die anyway and it's going to kill it's holder, the doctors should've realized they could've saved at least one life that day. I understand it's hard to make the choice to remove the fetus since it's alive but causing a double kill isn't any better.

How is it an any shape or form hard? The doctors had already declared that the fetus was dying and there's really no way a 17 (22 seems to be around the limit) week fetus could survive outside the womb, barring some "it was the mother's womb that was the issue" argument.

Scenarios:

1) Dead fetus and live mother

2) Dead fetus and dead mother

Choice seems painfully easy to me.

I know. What I'm trying to say is that those doctors are complete idiots.

They're actually not bible-thumpers. In the slightest. It's an outdated set of morals that don't fit with today's world. And it's a minority.

The one George W. Bush tried to save from the liberals?

Being catholic doesn't make you a bible-thumper. I already clarified the distinction.

This is worse than Rick Santorum saying that rape babies are gifts from God and that he wouldn't let even his daughter get an abortion if she herself got raped:

I'm curious where these Catholic people get their "abortion = murder", "a fetus is a human life" etc morals from then?

Like I said, it's an outdated morality. This comes from years of the church being involved in affairs they have no right to be.

There's a difference between being backwardly moral and being a bible thumper, imo.

im sorry then. my bad. if allowing a woman to needlessly die because of theocratic rule and against the better judgement of any competent physician is not classified under 'bible thumper', then i'm truly clueless on the whole matter of thumping bibles, i suppose.

It hasn't been a theocracy in years, assuming it ever was.

Ireland is just behind the times when it comes to legislation. Very behind the times.
