Yeah. One of the biggest obstacles to new readership is the sheer volume of material to catch up on in most series. I tried to do it with Superman but I just gave up at a certain point. Trying to read the highlight stories ie; DOS, OWAW, Final Crisis et al can only get you so far. A lot of subtle detail is contained in the smaller individual issues.

It's the same with GL's as well. Before Johns nurtured them, they had insane feats as well. Pre-Crisis Hal has some of the best cosmic feats around and even PC Superman commented that the ring had near limitless power.

Because they used the rings to it's fullest potential. Versus how they are used now. It was just a comment to Zop's post, which explained that why Surfer gets held back a lot, similar to GL's.

Frankly, Surfer should be just as impossible for Thanos to touch as The Runner was. Moreso even, given that he can phase out of reality and distribute his consciousness everywhere.
Thanos is just lucky, the universe needs a mid-ranking villain to give GOTG and The Avengers something to aim at.
Just think if he'd bothered to use the life-force trapping power he used against Lunatik, on someone ... Very few characters could escape that.
Or say he decided to take over their mind and body (as he did with an Old Power & Hulk-power imbued Skaar) ...
Surfer's highest feat though is probably surviving the arse kicking he got from T&A and then wiping them out with an energy source that scared even Galactus.

MM has a worse problem. He can phase out of reality as well. GL's can also go intangible, but you rarely see them do it.
Surfer does do it, for purposes other than fighting. His character has always been a hindrance when it came to fighting Thanos. Anyone else, and he'll get creative or ruthless (or both, as in the case with Lunatik).
Also, Surfer doesn't need to rely on that form of evasion, but it's just one of dozens of options that he has available to him.
