Its actually have a theory floating around that says the timeline split when ganondorf split the triforce for the first time and each goddess ruled over one time line. Din got the downfall timeline wher the world became more savage and power became more important for survival. Nayru got the Adult timeline where people made great discoveries and wisdom and knowledge were highly valued. And farore got the child timeline, where the the actions and courage of the hero became its driving force.
The odd one out here is the downfall timeline. Unlike the the other two paths this one comes from an unseen possibly that this Link didn't have a knowing role in. He made the Adult line by going to the future, Child by leaving that for his own timeline. The Downfall split /during/ the boss battle when Link must have simultaneously killed and be killed by Ganon..

Dude dies in one timeline, gets his childhood taken away in another, and becomes an undead grouchy pants full of regret in the last. Throw in MM and this guy just has the worst life ever.
Hmm, I think the Hero's spirit thing is awesome. It shows how badass OoT Link was(also how huge, geez that guy was tall.), and unlike the other possible outcomes lets him pass on all his amazing sword techniques to his direct descendant.
^Never really thought about that until a few days ago. Shade is actually around the same height as Dorf's 7'6". Meaning our Hylian grew a foot and a half after he was 18 😐
What I like about Shade is how he shows the frustration of all those Link's that save the realm with no recognition as the legendary hero he is. Worse for this Link as no one in his timeline knows about him defeating Ganon or saving Termina.

Wait, where did you get that 7'6" figure from?I must admit though, OoT Link being revealed to be said zombie in Hyrule Historia was probably the coolest little factoid ever devised for a gaming hero.
I called this years ago, it was obvious. He outright said he'd lived the life of the hero. uhuh
