Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

With Superman tone is part of the character, though. He's a living beacon of hope and security. With Watchmen Snyder did essentially a panel by panel adaptation of the comic almost perfectly. I don't see how you read Superman comics and get what we got in MoS or BvS as anywhere close to an accurate adaptation of Superman.

Personality/character and tone of the movie are two different things.

Look at Captain America. He's in a very "fun" tone in the Avengers movies, but a much more serious tone in his own movies. He's also a character that's a beacon of hope.

I'd disagree there. Just because a film has humor and charismatic characters like Tony Stark doesn't make everyone involved in the film happy go lucky. Cap himself was serious in both Avengers films as well as his standalone films, as was Thor. Superman, on the other hand, is too dour and conflicted, and that's not how he is depicted in the comics, and then the overall film he's in play out as a disaster movie.

Correct. The characterizations for the characters have been consistent in the MCU. Iron Man is always snarky no matter the movie; constantly throwing out 1 liners and trying to mask his fear with sarcasm. Cap is generally just trying to find a way to live in this time; and taking things seriously in the process. He's never overly dark and grim; but also never overly humorous.

Eh, to be fair Superman can vary wildly depending on the writer and the tone said writer chooses.

Not going to pretend Snyder got it spot on, but there's a ton of room to play with, and there's really no "definitive" one way to make Superman. Not since the Reeve days anyway.

They could get away with making small changes for Justice League and he'd be fine, imo.

To those crying about big boxoffice drops, BvS posted a 7.7 million Thursday. That's only a 4% drop.

True. But we got an elseworlds version of Batman in this movie, and a Superman with all the personality of an old shoe. I'd say the characterization isn't that great. It's not Cavill's fault that they told him to be completely and utterly boring and brooding.

A solid drop that could bode well for the weekend. We'll see soon...

If I were looking for a happy medium as a director I'd shoot more for the Superman TAS/JL/JLU depiction of Superman mixed with a lil Reeves as far as tone/personality is concerned. Snyder has gone more the videogame/Injustice route, even hinting at the fact that

Spoiler:
if Lois dies Superman would become a despot in the dream sequence/vision of the future from Flash.

Well there is no competition this weekend but I expect a 65% drop this weekend. Kinda normal for a blockbuster.

Got a question about the movie:

Spoiler:
Was that scout ship that was in Metropolis with the Genesis Chamber the same scout ship that Superman had taken (with the open stasis pod that Kara was likely in) and later Zod commandeered in MoS?

If so, how did that ship suddenly have a fingerprint reader for systems access when in MoS it required those pentagon shaped command keys to operate and if you didn't have one of those keys the sentry drones would attack you like they attacked Kal and Lois in MoS?

That is the one thing that BVS has going for it. There really is no competition. Though, I did watch Zootopia yesterday. Fun movie; but it's been out for a while now.

Seems like it, as all other Kryptonian ships were either destroyed or sucked into the singularity.

Probably just a continuity error we're supposed to overlook. The ship did seem to have Clark's "S" key still in place though. But I thought Lois took that to Zod's ship and how Jor-El's program was able to help her.

She did. But I think she left it behind or something. Regardless, as we see in MoS, Zod ended up with it and he used it in the Genesis ship.

Makes sense he then took it from his Command-ship to power the Seed-ship. Just don't recall him doing it.

Hey remember JLU Superman was pissed a lot, just beating hard guys like Shazam.

And don't forget the JLU storyline about Supes from the alternate reality turning evil, and the potential for that in the main Universe.

There's lots of dark stores they can do with Superman. Also the impression I got in these movies, is that he's on the path to be that beacon of hope for the world and will probably get there in the next couple of movies.

Didn't they use the S key to activate the ship Baby Kal arrived in and crashed that into the Command Ship in MoS causing the singularity? The scene where Professor Hamilton died.

Oh shit you're right. Maybe there were two of them or something because I certainly recall Zod talking to the Jor-El AI in the Genesis ship.

I think Zod had his own command key and then overwrote/deleted the Jor-El AI when he took over the ship, and Professor Hamilton and Lois had the House of El command key. Saying that, though, I still don't understand how

Spoiler:
Lex Luthor placing Zod's fingerprints on his own hands was a necessary action when he had Zod's entire corpse, and how even with his fingerprints the security drones weren't able to tell that Luthor wasn't Zod like they were able to tell Lois wasn't supposed to be on the ship and attacked her after Kal had put the command key into the drive in MoS. It was like that scene was only added to show Lex using the kryptonite scalpel in a morbid way.
