The Marvel parallel I see with this one is Hulk in 2003, which opened very big (though not as big as future Marvel/DC films would) but dropped 70% by it's second weekend as poor word of mouth spread. It got criticized for being way too serious and dark for it's subject matter - though the film was essentially a monster movie, the ratio of darkness to fun was off. One reviewer for People magazine, I remember vividly her calling out for Michael Bay as the kind of director this film needed (she felt ashamed to say it), instead of future Oscar winner Ang Lee. The difference was we thought the film would be awesome under Ang Lee( and it did have a few hardcore critical supporters), but then we saw it and concluded he took it in a direction we didn't like. While many of us were always wary of Zack Snyder's suitability for Superman ahead of time.
